Working for Seagate in China

What Seagate does Here

Wuxi
The Seagate operation in China was established in 1995 to build the latest generation of hard drives for the PC and consumers. Located in the Wuxi-Singapore Industrial Park, Jiangsu Province, the Wuxi plant underwent a major expansion in 2002. The 50,000 square metre state-of-the-art facility houses automated printed circuit board assembly lines, hard drive product lines and testing operations — all designed to address the increasing demand for volume production in the region. Today, Seagate Wuxi is the Company's largest hard drive manufacturing facility. The plant also plays a strategic role in establishing the Company's leadership position in the world's fastest growing technology market.

Seagate Wuxi combines top-notch manufacturing technology with a highly qualified team of engineers. Teams actively practise corporate initiatives such as Supply Chain Management, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing. These components combine to create greater efficiency and superior quality, matched only by a high standard of excellence. This is evident through the recognition the Wuxi operation has garnered over the years. Since opening in 1995, the plant has earned the distinction of top foreign company by export value in the Jiangsu Province. Seagate Wuxi also enjoys strong support from the local government.

Address: Chuan Er Lu, WuXi-Singapore Industrial Park

Suzhou
Seagate began operations in Suzhou in 2005 in a 76,000 square-foot facility. Using state-of-the-art automation, activities here include head stack assembly and disc drive assembly for the personal storage market. To ensure quality and on-time delivery, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing initiatives are embedded in the systems and practised by all employees.

Address: No. 200 Su Hong Zhong Lu, Suzhou Industrial Park 215021

Life Here
Wuxi and Suzhou are found in the southern part of Jiangsu Province in one of China's fastest growing economic regions known as the Golden Triangle. The cities are located south of the Yangtze River, between Nanjing and Shanghai on China's southeast coast and bordering Lake Taihu. These ancient cities, both important tourist destinations, date as far back as the Han Dynasty (205 BC) and are renowned for hand-woven silk, clay figurines, meticulous gardens, pagodas and Taihu Lake, to name a few. Residents enjoy a comparatively high standard of living. Although the nearest international airport is in Shanghai, the area is well-served by an extensive train system originating and terminating in Suzhou. If your new job with Seagate takes you to China, learn about the country's history, leadership, social issues and current news before you go.

The Wuxi-Singapore Industrial Park is a complete manufacturing and business centre containing a full range of amenities and support. You will find international clinics, international schools, expatriate clubs, banks, insurance companies and supermarkets. There is also a golf course and quality apartments for foreign executives. Learn more about living and working in Wuxi.

Weather
Ranging from hot and humid in the summer, to cold and humid in the winter, Wuxi and Suzhou enjoy four distinct seasons. Due to proximity to the East China Sea, the region has a monsoon season which begins in late summer and lasts until early autumn. Average annual rainfall is 39 inches and the average annual temperature is 64 degrees Fahrenheit.

Education
Since the early 1980s, basic education in China has achieved widespread, fundamental reform. Several international schools serve the needs of expatriate children in primary through high school, including the American International School of Wuxi and the Suzhou Singapore International School. You will also find a number of quality public, private and vocational institutes of higher learning in Jiangsu Province. For more background and information on China's educational system, check with the Ministry of Education.

Have Fun
Along with neighbouring cities and towns, Wuxi and Suzhou offer many opportunities for culture, dining, recreation and relaxation. After a dinner of the delicious, sweetly flavoured local cuisine, treat yourself to an evening of classical performing arts featuring Kunqu Opera, Pingtan and Guzheng at the Garden of Master of Nets in Suzhou. For a quiet, contemplative stroll, visit Plum Garden and Liyuan Garden in Wuxi, or the gardens in Suzhou, famous for their beauty and artistry in design. Gaze upon the giant Lingshan Buddha Statue, standing 100 ft higher than the Statue of Liberty. Or visit one of the dozen springs in Xihui Park. One of the area's best attractions is Taihu Lake. If you travel to the lake's western shore you will find Yixing with its bamboo groves, limestone caverns and tea plantations. For a taste of the big city, Nanjing and Shanghai are not too far away.

Shanghai, called Hu for short and alternatively named Shen, is the largest city in China in terms of population. It is also one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with a population of over 20 million. It is situated at the mouth of the Yangtze River, on China's central eastern coast. Today, Shanghai is an internationally famous port city and the biggest economic centre in China, playing an important role in China's economic development.

Shanghai is a nostalgic but modern city combining eastern and western styles. Hence it continues to attract both domestic and foreign tourists alike. More than 100 years ago, the transportation infrastructure was built up with the opening of its port, and thousands of businessmen flocked to Shanghai, causing both industry and culture to thrive.

Shanghai, once named the "Ever-bright City", benefitted from the great cultural heritage and traditions of China as well as the intense economic development that resulted from economic reforms in the 1990s in China. Today, Shanghai has more than regained its former glory as China's multinational hub of finance and business, which it was renowned for in the 1930s.

Weather
Shanghai has a humid subtropical climate (Koppen climate classification Cfa) and experiences four distinct seasons. In winter, cold northerly winds from Siberia can cause night-time temperatures to drop below freezing, and although not usually associated with snow, the city can receive one or two days of snowfall per year. In contrast, and in spite of being the peak tourist season, summer in Shanghai is very warm and humid, with occasional downpours or freak thunderstorms.

The city is also susceptible to typhoons, none of which in recent years has caused considerable damage. The most pleasant seasons are spring, although changeable, and autumn, which is generally sunny and dry. What Seagate does Here

The Seagate Taiwan office includes the following functions: sales and marketing, customer technical support, branded solutions, IT and other support departments. The teams provide marketing, technical support and customer service to Taiwan OEM / ODM, channel distributors and other Seagate partners.

Address: Room B, 14th Floor No. 363 Fu Hsin North Road, Taipei, Taiwan

Life Here
Taipei city is located in northern Taiwan. It lies in the relatively narrow, bowl-shaped valley of the DanShui and two of its main tributaries, the KeeLung and XinDaian Rivers. It is the largest city in Taiwan in terms of population. It is also the political and cultural centre of the country. Taipei is part of a major industrial area. Most of Taiwan's textile factories are here. Other players include makers of electronics, electrical machinery and appliances, wires and cables and refrigeration equipment. Shipbuilding, including yachts and other pleasure craft, is conducted in the port of KeeLung, east of the city. Railways and bus lines connect Taipei with all parts of the island. The city is served by the Taiwan TaoYuan International Airport, west of the city in Taoyuan.

Taipei city combines the modern and traditional, from the world's tallest completed skyscraper (Taipei 101) to the biggest collection of Chinese art.

Weather
Taipei has a humid subtropical climate. The average annual temperature is 23.6°C (74.5°F), with a summer average of 29.4°C (84.9°F) and a winter average of 11.0°C (51.8°F). The Pacific typhoon season occurs between June and October.

Education
The educational system in Taiwan is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China. The system produces pupils with some of the highest test scores in the world, especially in mathematics and science. It has been criticised for placing excessive pressure on students and eschewing creativity in favour of rote learning. Recent educational reforms intended to address these criticisms are a topic of intense debate in Taiwan. Although current law mandates only nine years of schooling, 95% of students go on to high school, trade school or college. The literacy rate in 2003 was 96.1%.

Have Fun
People call Taiwan the land of convenience because you can find anything or do anything at just about any time of day. Although locals work or study during the day, the nights are for play. Whether it's cocktails in a trendy lounge bar, dancing in a club, or live music at one of the city's venues, there is plenty of nightlife. For family entertainment, there are the night markets, some of which do not get started until after dark. There is also KTV, giant karaoke venues where groups of people can reserve a small room equipped with karaoke equipment. It is a favourite pastime for Taiwanese people and an opportunity to belt out songs with only your friends and family to ridicule you.

Taipei has an abundant selection and variety of temples. There are various temples to be seen all over the city, but one of the more notable and more frequently visited is the Lungshan Temple, located on the western edge of the city. With its ornate features and bright colours, Lungshan Temple, dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, truly stands out and is invariably busy with both tourists and local worshipers. Other interesting temples worth a visit are the relatively quiet and sedate Confucius Temple and the Taoist Xing Tian Gong.

Few cities in the world have served as the political and cultural centre of a country as immense as China for so many centuries. Hence, Beijing has been aptly hailed by the Encyclopaedia Britannica as 'one of the world's great cities'. Indeed, Beijing has played an important and integral role in the history of China through the centuries. The historical beauty of the Beijing landscape is seen in its opulent palaces, temples, huge stone walls and gates.

Beijing is also an important metropolis in recent years. It is becoming an increasingly important business centre in China as well. In recent times, Beijing also successfully hosted one of the most spectacular events in sporting history, the 2008 Olympic Games.

With more than 20 million people residing in Beijing, it is the second largest city in China, after Shanghai. To cater to the needs of these residents, Beijing's transport system is a network of concentric beltways or radial roads. The underground and suburban railways are further developed to link the city centre with outlying areas and surrounding towns.

Zhongguancun is very well known in China and it is often referred to as "China's Silicon Valley". There are many notable education and research centres here, such as the Peking University, Tsinghua University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Beijing is situated at the northern tip of the roughly triangular North China Plain, which opens to the south and east of the city. Major rivers flowing through the municipality include the Yongding River and the Chaobai River, part of the Hai River system, and flow in a southerly direction.

The city experiences hot and humid summers due to the East Asian monsoon. It also experiences generally cold, windy, dry winters. Average daytime high temperatures in January are around 1°C (33°F), while average temperatures in July are around 30°C (87 °F). The highest temperature ever recorded was 42 °C and the lowest recorded was -27 °C.

Beijing is home to a great number of colleges and universities, including several well-regarded universities of international stature, such as Peking University and Tsinghua University. As Beijing is the political and cultural capital of China, a larger proportion of tertiary-level institutions are concentrated here than in any other city in China, reaching at least 59 in number. Many international students from Japan, Korea, North America, Europe, Southeast Asia and elsewhere in the world come to Beijing to study every year.

Shanghai experiences on average 1,778 hours of sunshine per year, with the hottest temperature ever recorded at 40 °C (104 °F), and the lowest at −12 °C (10 °F). The average number of rainy days is 112 per year, with the wettest month being June. The average frost-free period is 276 days.

Education
Since 1978, China has adopted the education policy of "nine-year compulsory schooling system", which means all children are required to attend school for at least nine years. During the period, students will finish both the primary school programme and the junior middle-school programme. For higher education, students must pass examinations of all levels.

Have Fun
Because of Shanghai's status as the cultural and economic centre of East Asia for the first half of the twentieth century, it is viewed as the birthplace of everything considered modern in China, including the Chinese cinema and theatre.  It boasts several museums of regional and national importance such as the Shanghai Museum of art and history which has one of the best collections of Chinese historical artifacts in the world, including important archaeological finds since 1949.  The Platinum lies on Huaihai Road Commercial Street, neighbouring Xintiand, and is a modern 20-storey building with a total floor area of 32,200 square metres and an underground area of about 11,174 square metres. The building was completed at the end of 2005, with a wide range of modern amenities and facilities nearby, such as banks, schools, restaurants, hospitals, cinemas, parks and supermarkets.

Shanghai has also hosted a number of world events, including the 2007 Summer Special Olympics and a Live Earth concert. The Shanghai International Film Festival is held annually in the city. The city will be the host of the Expo 2010 World's Fair between May and October 2010.

Shanghai is also home to a number of professional sports teams, including Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League, the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association, and the Shanghai Golden Eagles of the China Baseball League.
