PC World magazine has named Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 hard drives the industry's best in a comprehensive evaluation of performance, features and customer support, Seagate (NYSE:STX) announced today.

"Today's computer users and IT managers need hard drives that provide much more than raw storage," said Brian Dexheimer, Seagate Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "Home users and customers in organisations of all sizes are demanding highly reliable access to information, data protection, more capacity and high performance to move and manage large amounts of content cost effectively. PC World has recognised Seagate's strengths in meeting customer needs in all these critical areas."

Seagate tops Competition in All Categories
Seagate's flagship 400GB Barracuda 7200.8 SATA with native command queuing (NCQ) outperformed every other Serial ATA (SATA) drive in speed tests, beating even the industry's fastest 10,000-rpm SATA hard drive. Seagate's two Barracuda 7200.8 parallel ATA entries outpaced all other ATA hard drives, with one winning Best Buy honours.

NCQ gives Seagate's 7,200-rpm SATA drives the speed of 10,000-rpm SATA drives, but at a much lower cost per gigabyte, for PC gaming systems and mainstream PCs, PC-based home media servers and entry-level SATA servers. NCQ speeds booting, application loading and file copying. The benefits of NCQ are described in a joint technology paper by Intel and Seagate titled "Serial ATA Native Command Queuing: An Exciting New Performance Feature for Serial ATA", available at: http://specials.seagate.com/ncqpaper/

PC World gave Barracuda high marks as the only product to include backup software for data protection and a step-by-step installation video, along with diagnostic tools. The magazine also highlighted Seagate's five-year drive warranty - the industry's best - in the PC World Test Centre evaluation of products from all five major hard drive manufacturers: Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi, Maxtor and Western Digital.

The newest generation of the industry's most popular PC hard drive family, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 provides high performance with 8MB or 16MB cache sizes, a 7,200-rpm spin speed and an 8.0 msec average seek time. With Seagate's patented SoftSonic fluid dynamic bearing motors, the Barracuda 7200.8 is extremely quiet. Seagate's Barracuda 7200.8 offers capacities of 200GB, 250GB, 300GB and 400GB - the largest on the market - and the option of a native SATA or Ultra ATA interface. It features a five-year warranty that covers all parts and labour, plus free technical support even after the warranty expires.
