Unlike any network video recorder (NVR), digital video recorder (DVR) or other appliance in the market, Steelbox products are purpose-built video surveillance solutions specifically designed to intelligently manage the distribution, storage and playback of audio and video data on IP networks. Steelbox solutions run on a real-time operating system (OS) called RTIK that is optimized to packet switch video data on a network and manage processing of high-bandwidth IP streams.

As a custom-designed OS, RTIK doesn’t suffer from the overhead, security problems and constant software patching endemic to general-purpose operating systems like Windows.

Because “Good Enough” Isn’t

Determined to find the best available hard drives for its surveillance solutions, the Steelbox team evaluated a variety of products from several leading storage vendors. Following extensive review, the Steelbox product line standardized on Seagate hard drives in 2005.

However, desktop-class drives exhibit weaker performance in multi-drive (for example, RAID) surveillance storage arrays because they lack superior rotational vibration (RV) tolerance, causing RV-induced drive recalibrations and degraded throughput when streaming video data. Desktop drives also deliver mediocre reliability in these rigorous storage environments, endangering valuable video data and further reducing net performance.

Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDDs are specifically designed for high-density storage environments where large capacity, enterprise-class reliability (1.4 million hours MTBF), low power consumption and RV tolerance are core requirements. Enterprise Capacity HDDs provide up to 4TB of storage in a single, five-platter drive ideal for business-critical applications where dollars/GB and GB/watt are primary metrics.

Purpose-Built From the Ground Up

With installations in the U.S., Europe and Asia, Steelbox products are in an impressive variety of industries that rely on accurately storing and retrieving large amounts of data for security, business-process improvement and surveillance monitoring applications.

To ensure superior results, SteelVault storage arrays are designed to process and store hundreds of video streams simultaneously. These products provide from 2TB to 48TB of video storage and utilize their dedicated power, processor, memory and I/O system resources to ensure the highest possible performance during peak demand cycles.

The storage modules logically attach to media appliances, and together they form a complete networked video distribution and storage system. Furthermore, appliances and storage arrays are flexibly configured with redundant power supplies and are stackable for large storage expansion capabilities.

One Size Does Not Fit All

In response to such varied needs, the Steelbox product line offers comprehensive storage solutions with two flagship IP video storage product offerings: the SteelVault 5400 and 5600, which are available in storage capacities from 12TB to 48TB. The 5400 and 5600 models include 24 Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDDs and both models are equipped with redundant power supplies and cooling fans. Both of these storage solutions are ideal for large-scale applications. For more cost-conscious applications, the SteelVault 5200 ranges from 2TB to 4TB of storage.
