| Medalist Pro 7200 RPM
and Ultra DMA
Seagate Technology has
confirmed an issue when using three of our drive models in Ultra DMA mode. This issue only
occurs on the drive models listed and only under specific conditions. This issue only
affects a small sub-set population of the models mentioned. Only early production
drives are affected by this issue; currently shipping drives are not affected.
What is the
issue?
An issue with data
transfer occurs in Windows 95 and Windows NT when bus mastering drivers have been loaded
into the operating system and the ATA controller has been configured for Ultra DMA
support. Windows 98 automatically loads Ultra DMA drivers during the installation if
the proper chipsets are found during the hardware search. If the ATA controller has
been configured for Ultra DMA support, then the Windows 98 installation may fail.
This issue has occurred
when using several different motherboards that have integrated Ultra DMA compatible
controllers.
What drive
models are affected?
Only a small number of
drives with the following drive model numbers are affected. The following models are the
only Seagate drives affected by this issue.
- ST39140A
- ST36530A
- ST34520A
If my drive
is one of the affected models, what do I do?
If you are experiencing
difficulty with one of the drives listed above and have or anticipate upgrading to a
motherboard with integrated Ultra DMA support, please call Technical Support or email our Disc Support team for more information and
help resolving this issue.
What
workaround is available?
Until contacting our
Technical Support department, disable Ultra DMA support at the controller or operating
system level. |
