Big Wave Storage: FreeAgent Fits with Videographer's "On-the-Go" Life

Graham Nash’s work space is likely to include a beachside table—where his FreeAgent Go for Mac is right at home.

Graham Nash’s “office space” might be a folding tray on an airplane one day or a windswept stretch of beach in Australia or Hawaii the next. Nash is a busy sports videographer whose work for clients like Vans, O’Neill, Fuel TV and Surfline.com takes him all over the world to document some of the biggest stars in professional surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding.

Nash’s job requires him to keep a suitcase at the ready, which is just one reason why he always packs Seagate’s compact and rugged external hard drives.

“My life is on the go,” says Nash, who’s based in Santa Cruz, California. “I’m constantly traveling from one location to another, and I couldn’t live without my Seagate hard drives.”

Over the past seven years, Nash has amassed thousands of hours of video—much of it jaw-dropping high-definition content that he stores on high-capacity Seagate FreeAgent drives for fast and easy access.

“I need to find shots at the click of a button,” he explains. “Seagate has revolutionized my world.”

Nash recently returned from assignment on Oahu’s North Shore, site of the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing tournament, which attracts more than 100 elite surfers from around the world. For that job, he brought along a sleek 500-GB FreeAgent Go for Mac portable drive and a roomy 1.5-TB FreeAgent Desk for Mac drive. Both drives fit easily in Nash’s travel bag and are durable enough to withstand the vibrations, temperatures and other environmental extremes that come with the territory of his job.

“I need a drive I can depend on,” says Nash, who shot 32-GB of video during a one-hour helicopter ride. “Every wave is different and every shot is unique. It was great having enough space to shoot as much as I wanted without any worries.”

The second-generation FreeAgent line is ideal for the demands of professionals like Nash, as well as the everyday needs of consumers looking to store, share and protect their valuable digital files. Both drives used by Nash incorporate the FireWire 800 interface for Macs—ideal for high-speed storage and video capture.

“Both (the FreeAgent Desk for Mac and FreeAgent Go for Mac) drives are super fast, efficient and simple to use,” says Jon van Bronkhorst, executive director of product marketing for Seagate’s Consumer Solutions Division. “And these drives are big. The FreeAgent Desk for Mac that Graham is using, for example, will hold over 37 hours of high-definition content.”

Nash also appreciates that he can work with Seagate’s FreeAgent solutions even when he doesn’t have access to AC power—which is often the case when he’s on the road. “I don’t have to worry about bringing any extra power cords along with me,” Nash says. “The drives run straight off my laptop battery.”

And because both drives are easily transportable (the FreeAgent Go for Mac weighs just 7.76 ounces or 0.22 kilograms) Nash has an elegant solution for sharing his work—no more hassles or delays trying to send large video files over a bandwidth-constrained corporate network.

“It’s very easy to go to my clients’ offices and take my files with me,” he explains. “I finished a project at O’Neill’s office (in Santa Cruz) the other day. I brought the FreeAgent drive with me, plugged it in and everything was right there.”

Note: Watch how Seagate storage is used to capture epic waves and more.
