The cities are located south of the Yangtze River, between Nanjing and Shanghai on China's southeast coast and bordering Lake Taihu. These ancient cities, important tourist destinations both, date as far back as the Han Dynasty (205 BC) and are renowned for hand-woven silk, clay figurines, meticulous gardens, pagodas and Taihu Lake to name a few. Residents enjoy a comparatively high standard of living. Although the nearest international airport is in Shanghai, the area is well-served by an extensive train system terminating and originating in Suzhou.
