Seagate Helps Germany’s ABUS Protect Malls, Hotels and More

Whether it's monitoring vast expanses of retail space in shopping malls or safeguarding the security of guests and staff at a luxury hotel, ABUS Security-Center and Seagate have it covered.

ABUS-SC, a leading manufacturer of electronic security technology based in Affing, Germany, uses Seagate SV35 Series hard drives to meet the stringent demands of its digital video-surveillance systems. These systems must run 24/7, maximizing the need for storage reliability, capacity and performance—all hallmarks of Seagate's surveillance-optimized hard drives.

“We have complete confidence in Seagate's SV35 drives,” said Marco Niecke, public relations manager at ABUS  “The drives have been engineered specifically for the video-surveillance market, so we know they'll deliver in terms of the reliability and performance that we need.”

The ABUS Eytron Hybrid Digital Video Recorder is one of the highest-performance recording systems on the market. It allows recording and live viewing of images from all connected cameras to take place in real time for all channels. It also has the capability to carry out several functions simultaneously, including live viewing and recording of images, image playback, data export and network access.

Seagate's SV35 drives bring a number of key features to video-surveillance systems, including high-speed data transfer, enhanced caching capabilities, built-in error recovery for non-stop streaming and thermal monitoring. And with sufficient capacity to store more than a month of high-resolution video while drawing minimal power from system resources, the drives deliver best-in-class reliability with lower operational costs.

Peace-of-Mind Protection

The ultimate test for any surveillance system is its ability to protect people and assets. At the luxury Mediterranean Village Hotel in the Greek town of Paralia-Katerini, ABUS Security Center products—equipped with Seagate storage—will be used to help keep guests, staff and property secure.

The hard-working cameras and recording units won't simply provide increased security in the huge complex; the technology will also be used to coordinate the day-to-day running of the hotel.  For example, the many swimming pools can be remotely monitored in order to establish appropriate cleaning schedules, and deliveries of goods can also be monitored and controlled.

On such a large campus, where a large number of cameras are in use both indoors and outdoors, Seagate's SV35 drives provide the ideal storage solution with their ability to handle multiple streams of video simultaneously and the capacity to archive video for long periods—the 1-TB version can store up to 32 days of surveillance video.

Stress-Free Retail Therapy

Today's large, sprawling shopping malls also present unique challenges for surveillance. There are numerous entrances and exits, delivery and loading areas, large open plazas, multiple levels of shops and car parking facilities—all of which means opportunities for criminal activity abound.

In such an environment, strategically placed video recorders can help prevent theft and vandalism, improve customer and employee safety and provide crime investigators with valuable evidence.

Mark Whitby, vice president of EMEA sales and marketing at Seagate, says that close collaboration between Seagate and ABUS has been instrumental in providing storage solutions to meet a wide range of video-surveillance needs.

“We listen to our customers so we can provide storage solutions that have the features they need and that add value to their business,” said Whitby. “People want to enjoy their vacation and shopping experiences. By combining our technology and expertise, Seagate and ABUS are helping people do so, secure in the knowledge that their safety and security is in good hands.”
