Summary

 

Converting Maxtor Shared Storage II to Central Axis This version of the Maxtor Manager software and firmware converts your Maxtor Shared Storage II into a Maxtor Central Axis, allowing you to access and share the contents of your Maxtor Shared Storage II securely over the Internet. This software is compatible with Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X operating systems.

Procedure:

 
  1. After downloading the .zip file to your system extract the contents of the zip file into a folder of your choice.

    Note: This is a two-part upgrade. We strongly recommend that you upgrade the Maxtor Manager software before upgrading the firmware.

  2. Click on the Setup.exe file you extracted and follow the instructions to complete the Central Axis client software upgrade.

  3. Mac users, double click the Setup.dmg file, double click the Maxtor Central Axis Icon, and follow the instructions to install the Central Axis client software.

  4. After you have completed the Maxtor Manager software update on your PC, or Mac, the firmware included with the download must be updated to complete the Web Access and Share conversion. For instructions on upgrading the firmware please read below or open the MSStoMCAfirmwareupdate.rtf in the download.

  5. Upon completion of the firmware upgrade please read the Quick Start Guide included in the download to setup your first Central Axis shared account.

Maxtor Shared Storage II to Maxtor Central Axis Firmware Update Instructions

  1. Double click on the Maxtor Manager icon on your desktop.

  2. Once the Central Axis is located in the discovery screen, select it and click Settings.

  3. From the Maxtor Manager Main Menu, select Maxtor Central Axis Advanced Web Page to open your default web browser.

  4. If you have applied a password to the Central Axis Drive you will be prompted to enter it at this time.

  5. After entering your password, select ADVANCED FEATURES > SYSTEM MAINTENANCE > SYSTEM UPDATE.

  6. Click on the Manual Install button.

  7. After the update warning screen is displayed, click Next.

  8. When the Manual System Update screen is displayed, click on the Browse button.

  9. Select the MCAWin.bin file for Windows or MCAMac.bin for Macintosh users and click Open.

  10. Click Update, At this point the firmware will load to your Shared Storage Drive. The update process takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. During this time, the Central Axis Drive will be inaccessible to users.

  11. Once the update is finished you will receive a confirmation screen letting you know that your Central Axis Drive has been updated successfully. Click DONE and close the browser.

    Note: Now that your Maxtor Shared Storage II has been converted into a Maxtor Central Axis, Firmware updates will be called appliance updates, and any Maxtor Manager software updates will be labeled client updates.

  12. To setup web access and sharing open the QuickStart_Windows.pdf or QuickStart_Mac.pdf included in the download and follow the instructions starting at part 4.
