What is Seagate University?

Seagate University is a 10-week on-boarding program designed to give new college graduates an accelerated introduction to Seagate and our Sales, Marketing, Customer Service (SMC) and Business Units organization. From August to October, participants attend training sessions, executive presentations, and site tours at all three of our primary American sites (California, Colorado, and Minnesota).

As part of the program curriculum, participants receive intensive training in Six Sigma project methodology, and then apply what they've learned in the classroom to assigned group projects in the field. These projects revolve around key Seagate initiatives and involve frequent interaction with executives in the organization. Participants are taught techniques to effectively manage and contribute to projects, as well as successful presentation and negotiation strategies. Moreover, participants learn how to become leaders who can guide the company into the future.

“The program gave me the tools and connections that I needed to make a meaningful contribution to the company right out of college."

“Seagate-U really brought me up to speed fast and enabled me to build a meaningful network within the company."

What's our Vision?

We provide a learning environment that enables people to develop to their fullest potential and integrate into the company as quickly as possible.

“You leave the program informed and ready to exceed expectations in your role."

History of Seagate-U

The history of Seagate-U stretches more than 20 years to 1981. Seagate, only a few years old at the time, instituted the program after it recognized the need to introduce new talent to the company's Sales division. As a result, Seagate-U was designed as a program to provide intensive training to new college hires in order to get them up to speed with the company as quickly as possible. Participants were offered instruction in key disciplines and learned through experience by working closely in the field with seasoned personnel.

There are many success stories of past graduates of Seagate University. A number of Directors and Vice Presidents of the company began their careers with the Seagate University program. The current Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Brian Dexheimer, as well as the Senior Vice President of Americas Sales, Randy Lee, are graduates of the Seagate University class of 1984. Many alumni of the program have been honored with awards and promotions throughout the company.

Today, Seagate-U has expanded to Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, and Business Units. The Seagate-U program now incorporates engineers, managers, and business analysts, in addition to salespeople. The scope and length of the program has changed repeatedly as well throughout the course of the program; currently, the program is 10 weeks long with training sessions in California, Colorado, and Minnesota. The curriculum is also being continuously refined to offer participants the most effective and valuable education possible - a feat that few other companies can match.

“In Seagate U, I interacted with operations that I would never normally work with in the course of my daily job.”
