LaCie d2 FAQs

Video editors should look for high capacity (at least 8 TB), fast transfer speeds (preferably 7,200 RPM and USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt), and reliable performance for large file handling. A durable, well-cooled design and compatibility with editing software and systems like macOS or Windows are also essential. Look for drives with enterprise-class components and long warranties for professional workflows.

The LaCie d2 Professional does require external power. It ships with an AC power adapter (100‑240V input, 18 W output) that must be connected to a live outlet for the device to run. Unlike bus‑powered portable drives, it cannot draw power over USB‑C or Thunderbolt because its internal IronWolf Pro hard drive requires AC power to spin and operate. Always use only the included power supply; third‑party power bricks may damage it and void the warranty.

LaCie d2 Professional is available in the following capacities:

  • 4 TB
  • 8 TB
  • 10 TB
  • 14 TB
  • 16 TB
  • 18 TB
  • 20 TB
  • 24 TB
  • 30 TB

These options offer massive storage for bandwidth-intensive media tasks, making the d2 Professional a versatile choice for creative professionals.

LaCie d2 Professional offers broad device compatibility thanks to its USB‑C (USB 3.2 Gen 2) interface. It works with:

  • Windows PCs (Windows 10 or newer) and Macs (macOS 12 Monterey or newer), typically formatted as exFAT for cross‑platform use.
  • iPad models featuring USB‑C.
  • Devices supporting USB4, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 via USB‑C.

As an external desktop hard drive, it’s not bus-powered as an external AC adapter is required (included in the box), and its USB ports provide only data transfer.

For high-resolution video editing, storage needs depend on resolution, codec and project length:

  • 4K video: roughly 45–100 GB per hour (compressed formats like H.264/H.265)
  • ProRes 4K: around 300–500 GB per hour
  • 8K video: can exceed 1 TB per hour

For most editors, at least 4 TB – 8 TB is recommended for active projects, with 16 TB or more ideal for ongoing work, archives and future growth. Fast drives (7,200 RPM or better) are essential for smooth playback and rendering.

It’s best to use a layered approach. Use a reliable external drive like LaCie d2 Professional as your primary storage, and add a secondary offsite or cloud-based backup to safeguard against data loss.
