Ten Million Cheetah 15Ks now running the Enterprise

Seagate Technology (NYSE: STX), the industry's leading supplier of disc drives, today announced the Company has delivered its ten-millionth 15K-rpm disc drive. As a technology innovator and Enterprise champion, Seagate delivered the world's first 15K-rpm disc drive in 2001 and continues today with its fourth generation Cheetah 15K.4. Because of its field-proven reliability and award-winning performance, more storage solution manufacturers choose Seagate disc drives as the core technology for their breakthrough Enterprise storage products.

"Market acceptance and adoption of 15K-rpm drives more than doubled from 2002 to 2004, with Seagate's 15K Cheetah comprising over two-thirds of all 15K-rpm drives delivered worldwide over the same timeframe," said David Reinsel, Director of Storage Research at IDC. "A large percentage of major OEMs deliver storage solutions that can be managed centrally and provide a high level of IOPS per square foot, which plays to the strength of 15K-rpm drives."

"This milestone signals a changing of the guard for enterprise storage," said Jeff Loebbaka, Seagate Vice President of Global Marketing. "15K drives have become the standard choice for the enterprise. At the same time, 2.5 inch enterprise-class drives are emerging to meet the need for new high I/O density platforms. Seagate is proud to have led the industry transition for 3.5 inch drives from 10K to 15K."

Cheetah 15K.4
The Cheetah 15K.4 is the best price-per-performance disc drive from Seagate, benefitting from the team experience acquired from producing over four generations of Cheetah 15K-rpm products. With the Cheetah 15K.4's high performance and reliability, it is designed as the mainstream enterprise drive of choice for use in today's most critical I/O-intensive data centres.

The Cheetah 15K.4 delivers 30 per cent more I/Os per second and 20 per cent faster response times than 3.5 inch 10K-rpm drives. As a result, the 15K.4 enables higher performance with fewer drives, and fewer drives means lower total cost of ownership.

Cheetah 15K.4 is available in leading Ultra320 SCSI and Fibre Channel interfaces and will also be offered in the latest Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface. A single SAS storage subsystem will be able to house Seagate's low cost-per-GB NL35 Serial ATA (SATA) drives used for nearline storage in the same enclosure as the ideal 3.5 inch enterprise disc drive, the Cheetah 15K.4, used for online storage. SAS's point-to-point, full duplex architecture and 3GB/s transfer speed, coupled with Cheetah 15K.4 I/O performance, enable the fastest, lowest cost ownership, storage solutions.

The Cheetah 15K.4 is offered in capacities of 36GB, 73GB and 147GB, and is the industry's first 15K-rpm drive to include a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rating of 1.4 million hours. MTBF testing was conducted at Full Duty cycles (24 x 7), ensuring that the 15K.4 is rated for true enterprise workloads.
