The new program aims to educate students on the dangers of Hepatitis B and how students can be protected from the ravages of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) through vaccination and proper preventive measures. More than 3,500 students of the Peking University will be offered free vaccinations in co-operation with CFHPC. The Hepatitis B prevention campaign is an important initiative under Seagate's global citizenship program.
"We are grateful to Seagate for helping us raise the awareness of Hepatitis B and promote the health of university students," said Wang Zhao, vice-director of CFHPC. "Many people do not know that Hepatitis B is a completely preventable disease. We are pleased to see a high-technology company like Seagate play a leading role in corporate social responsibility in China. We hope to see more companies following Seagate's example and lending their support for Hepatitis prevention and education programs."
In addition to the vaccination program for these students, a key goal of the program is to share with these students the latest information on Hepatitis B prevention so as to heighten their awareness and understanding of this disease.
"Seagate is deeply honored to work hand in hand with the CFHPC on such a significant project that is designed to protect people from hepatitis and help correct any misconceptions about this disease," said Andrew Yang, country manager of Seagate China. "We hope that other companies will also join us and CFHPC in this worthwhile project of saving lives from diseases that can be prevented."
Hepatitis B is an inflammation of the liver and is caused by the HBV. Chronic Hepatitis B is transmitted through blood contaminated by HBV. People cannot be infected by the sharing of food and casual social contact. Hepatitis B is recognized as endemic in China and other parts of Asia. The proportion of the world's population currently infected with the virus is about three to six percent. But up to a third of the population have been exposed to this virus. Symptoms of the acute illness caused by the virus include liver inflammation, vomiting, jaundice and, rarely, death.
The CFHPC Peking University vaccination project has received the backing of a number of government departments as well as the support of the Ministry of Health of The People's Republic of China (MOH) release office, the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI) and the Asian Liver Center at Stanford University. Seagate Technology is the sole sponsor of the Peking University project.
The Chinese Foundation for Hepatitis Prevention and Control (CFHPC) is a foundation approved and registered by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China.
The mission of CFHPC is to raise funds from domestic and overseas social communities, other organizations and individuals in order to carry out its mission of developing Hepatitis prevention and control programs. These include: conducting health education and training work; supporting and facilitating scientific research and work related to Hepatitis prevention and control in poor areas; improving and protecting people's health conditions in China.
Since the CFHPC was established, it has raised funds and developed Hepatitis B vaccine projects to help poor people and also conduct health education programs that have helped to raise public awareness about this disease.
