Seagate And Kasetsart University To Hold The Xceed Camp For Computer-Engineering Students

BANGKOK, Thailand - Seagate Technology (Thailand) Ltd., in partnership with Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Engineering, is launching the 4th Xceed Camp, a week-long event for students interested in becoming computer software engineers.

The event will be held May 21-27 at the National Agricultural Support and Training Center in Nakorn Pathom province. The objective is to provide a team-based learning environment in which first-year computer engineering students can significantly enhance their computer-programming skills by actually putting to work the knowledge that they’ve acquired in the classroom.

“Now that more automated equipment is needed for manufacturing, engineers have to be knowledgeable not only in electrical and mechanical engineering but also in computer engineering and programming,” said Jeffrey D. Nygaard, VP and country manager, Seagate Technology (Thailand) Ltd. “We see the need to increase the pool of available talent in the computer-programming field. Seagate sponsors the camp because we believe it is a wonderful opportunity to nurture and motivate students who are interested in technology, and who may one day be Seagate employees.”

Yuen Poovarawan, associate professor and VP for Information Technology of Kasetsart University, said “Seagate continues to be a strong supporter of this camp and its objectives.”

“In today’s highly competitive global economy, it’s essential that our students have the skills they’ll need to succeed,” Poovarawan said. “Seagate, through its support of our camp, is equipping students with the valuable skills needed for our information-based economy.”

The camp will provide a team-based environment for 150 freshmen to implement what they’ve learned in the classroom. With support from senior students and coaches, students will undertake computer-programming assignments that include: designing, developing and modifying large software systems; function-oriented and object-oriented modular design techniques; designing for re-use and maintainability; specification and documentation; verification and validation; project team organization and management.
