Each student will receive a $2,000 scholarship. Awards were based on the students’ grade-point average, financial need, community involvement and technical innovation/creativity.
Scholarship recipient Billy Oliver, a Silver Creek High School senior, plans to pursue a career in biomedical or chemical engineering, so that he can improve the lives of others. “Pursuing this (career), I could help people very easily by working with ideas such as stem cells, which if used correctly could save countless lives,” he said.
Franklin Hanson, also a senior at Silver Creek High School, credits a tour of Seagate’s Longmont facility for his decision to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. He said he was amazed at the facility’s advanced equipment. “My calculus teacher always tells us that the journey, or how you solve the problem, is often much more important than the actual destination,” Hanson said. “This phrase describes how I feel about engineering. I enjoy the process immensely and I’m looking forward to making a career of it.”
In addition to the $2,000 scholarship, recipients will receive one of Seagate’s latest products, a 1-Terabyte FreeAgent Pro external storage solution. With advanced features and software, this hard drive offers extra storage capacity for digital video, photos and MP3 files, as well as the latest storage-intensive video games.
“We’re very excited about this opportunity to offer support to students in our community who have a passion for the sciences, an innovative spirit and an interest in applying technology in ways that will benefit society,” said Andy Davis, Seagate vice president of Design Engineering.
