Bringing Cheer into the Lives of Disadvantaged Children in Singapore

Children from various welfare homes and associations will be among the first in Singapore to experience a brand new youth theatre. Through the support of Seagate, ShowBiz! will embark on a month-long performance tour of "The White Elephant" at homes to bring cheer and entertainment to the children.

"Seagate is a patron of the arts and we are naturally delighted to support ShowBiz!'s plan to expose our youth to art and culture," said James Chirico, Seagate senior vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific Manufacturing Operations. "This platform provides opportunities for these children to be exposed to the theatre and will help to inculcate in them an appreciation for creativity and innovation."

To further propagate this unique blend of volunteerism and arts, ShowBiz! will also be performing at the Seagate-sponsored Family Day event for Singapore Children's Society on September 29, 2001.

ShowBiz! is formed by a group of volunteer undergraduates from the Singapore Management University (SMU) - the first university in Singapore to incorporate community service as a core curriculum for their undergraduates with an objective of developing holistic and well-rounded graduates.

"We are delighted to have Seagate as the main sponsor of our community service initiative," said Gerald Goh, president of ShowBiz!. "With their support, we have the opportunity to make theatre accessible to disadvantaged children in Singapore. Our hope is to be able to use theatre as a means to enliven and enrich the lives of children while at the same time, challenge the notion of community service being static or boring. It will be our platform to help our fellow students experience the joy of helping the less fortunate."

ShowBiz!'s volunteers have been mentored by Assistant Professor Kirpal Singh and Sandy Phillips, two distinguished members of the local arts scene, and consulted with ACT 3 - Singapore's renowned children's theatre.

Seagate has taken a long-term perspective to its social responsibility in Singapore. It actively fosters a healthy balance between its professional performance and the Company's duty as a responsible corporate citizen. In addition to ShowBiz!, Seagate has supported NTU's TechnoQuest, Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), National University of Singapore, Supportive Parents and Resource Conference (SPARC) and Changkat Primary School.

ShowBiz!'s schedule of performance is as follows:

29 Aug Chen Su Lan Methodist Children's Home
12 Sep Gracehaven Home
29 Sep Seagate-Singapore Children's Society
