The IDC report reveals that the Indian hard disc drive market experienced healthy growth of over 35.8 percent in terms of units and 33.6 percent in terms of revenue in Q1 2000 over the previous quarter. More than 420,000 disc drives were shipped in the same quarter. ATA drives accounted for 96 percent of the total number of units, and 88 percent in terms of revenue. The SCSI drive market grew by 21.7 percent in terms of revenue during the quarter.
"Seagate is pleased to be recognized as India's #1 player in the disc drive market once again," said Joel Stead, Seagate's senior vice president of International Sales & Marketing. "India has been and continues to be a key strategic market for Seagate. We have worked closely with our OEM customers, distribution partners and the reseller channel to deliver best-in-class storage solutions and services, and our efforts are proving to be successful."
In conjunction with its authorized distributors including Ingram Micro, Karma Distribution and ACI Computer, Seagate has been very proactive in its marketing activities in India, organizing road shows and trade shows with other IT partners. In January Seagate joined with MAIT to sponsor India's First Annual Storage Conference, a forum to discuss storage trends and related issues. The Company also sponsored information technology (IT) symposiums to share the latest trends with India's IT community.
The Seagate Partner Program was launched in India in December 1999, designed exclusively for Seagate resellers. The Seagate Partner Program enables the Company to be more responsive and proactive to the channel's needs for information on its products and ultimately assist resellers in selling those products.
Continuing its tradition of leadership in product performance and quality, Seagate disc drives have garnered rave reviews from leading technology publications in India. In its June issue, CHIP Magazine India called the Barracuda ATA a "power drive" and noted, "(the Barracuda ATA drive is) top in performance, winner among other IDE drives." The publication also recognized the Cheetah 18XL for its speed, "The Cheetah lives up to its name by being the fastest drive in this roundup." In March, IT Magazine India reviewed the U8 and pronounced it the "Mainstay of the Seagate brigade." Seagate was also voted PC Quest India "User's Choice" for Hard Disc Drives in the publication's annual poll in 1999.
Seagate provides a wide range of storage products for the Indian Information Technology (IT) market, from the entry level U series and Barracuda ATA family for PCs and consumer devices, to Cheetah and Barracuda disc drives for the Enterprise market. All Seagate drives come with Seagate's exclusive 3D Defense System protection, which includes SeaShell, SeaShields, Drive Self Test (DST), SeaTools and DiscWizard software that provides Seagate drives with high reliability and ease of installation.
