Seagate's USB 2.0 Pocket Hard Drive fills the gap between USB thumb drives and laptops
Digitization allows us to quickly and easily save messages, documents, photos, videos, and music onto a computer. But all of that data also takes up a lot of space. Until now, if you wanted to have your personal digital memory close at hand at all times, you had to choose between copying a selection of data onto a USB thumb drive or lugging around a big external hard drive or laptop. That's because the popular thumb drives have limited capacities that are not enough for big collections of vacation photos or music favourites.
But now, Seagate, maker of the world's most popular hard drives, has seized on the trend toward ultra-compact, pocket-sized storage devices and developed a practical alternative to USB thumb drives. Inside the Pocket Hard Drive's round shell, one of the world's smallest hard drives spins at 3,600 rpms, and can store about 80 hours of digital music, 2,000 five-megapixel photos, or 4.5 hours of MPEG-4 or DivX-based video. The Pocket Hard Drive plugs right into a computer's USB port and its USB cable retracts into the shell-shaped design. Plug-and-play technology means that modern Windows and Apple computers can recognize the device without cumbersome installation procedures. The Pocket Hard Drive also comes with utility software that permits users to protect access to their data on the Pocket Hard Drive.
So, what kind of treatment can a drive like this handle? Not to worry. The engineers at Seagate have made the Pocket Hard Drive durable enough to go almost anywhere. They developed a mobile hard drive that competes with flash memory in terms of reliability and performance and can survive an occasional fall thanks to the G-force protection system, which safely "parks" the drive's moving parts when the drive is turned off. The Pocket Drive's round shell is made of a durable, scratch-resistant plastic and has no pointy corners or edges, so it fits comfortably into a pocket or backpack. Another special feature is a built-in LED that lights up blue when the drive is reading or writing data, helping you to know when it is safe to unplug it from your PC.
A 2.5GB model is also available, priced at around €149 including VAT.
