"Our U Series provides the reliability, capacity and performance needed for a wide range of applications," said Joel Stead, Seagate senior vice president of International Sales & Marketing. "We are pleased that top Japanese OEMs are embracing our U Series drive - a reflection of our commitment to meet their need for best-in-class storage solutions."
According to the February 2000 International Data Corp. (IDC) Worldwide PC forecast and review, total PC shipments in Japan reached 10,589,000 units. IDC forecasts a Cumulative Average Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11% for total PC shipments in Japan between 1999 and 2003. The report also cited continued expansion of the consumer market as gaming, digital cameras, MP3 content and the explosion of e-Commerce accelerate in the second half of 2000.
"The explosion of the Internet, e-Commerce, and the expanding consumer electronics market signify the rising demand for storage," said Tom Kobayashi, representative director of Seagate Nippon Japan. "With the U series' industry leading reliability and low-cost, Seagate has provided its OEM partners the best storage solution to meet this demand."
Leading Asian publications have reviewed and heaped praise on the U series. These accolades include: "Hard Disc Drive of 1999" (PC World Malaysia), "Top 3 Products of 1999" (PC World Singapore), "Star of Shock Protection" (PC Buyer Hong Kong), "Armor-Clad HDD" (Microsoftware Korea), "A well-priced hard disc with tons of space" (PC Quest India) and "Low cost drive with high capabilities" (Berita Harian Malaysia).
Protected by Seagate's exclusive 3D Defense System to withstand 350Gs nonoperating shock, the U Series is the industry's most robust 3 1/2-inch drive. Seagate's 3D Defense System is the most comprehensive set of protective features in the industry. Unique advantages, such as the SeaShield and SeaShell, protect the drive from accidental damage that may occur during the integration process. SeaShell is a clear, recyclable clamshell package that protects the drive from 1000+ Gs of nonoperating shock, resists ESD and simplifies barcode scanning. SeaShield is a unique, integrated PCB cover that enhances handling protection, reduces returns and lowers service costs. SeaTools software helps the end-user diagnose problems and determine whether they are drive-, hardware-, or file system- related, helping customers to quickly and intuitively find solutions to system issues.
Ensuring ease of use and fast installation, U Series also ships with DiscWizard, hailed as the best disc installation software by PC World for the past three years in a row. "Seagate takes the prize for best software," said PC World in October 1999. "Its Windows-based DiscWizard is a pleasure to use, and it's the only one here that analyzes your current setup, asks you what you want to install, then tells you exactly what to do next, using helpful graphics and animation. It also produces a step-by-step installation checklist that is customized to your particular setup."
