In addition to providing financial assistance, Seagate will donate a number of high-capacity hard disc drives for the school's media-production laboratories. Seagate will also offer a short-term internship program at its facility in Ang Mo Kio, and will sponsor an overseas community service program to facilitate the filming of documentaries. Seagate's high-performance, highly reliable Cheetah and Barracuda hard drives have been used in the making of such films as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Cold Mountain, The Cat in the Hat, and in the Harry Potter series.
"Today's top filmmakers are creating movies that use an incredible amount of storage - data that must be easily managed and accessed, without breaking budgets," said Jim Chirico, senior vice president of Global Disc Storage Operations at Seagate. "Our products enable directors and editors to view the results of a scene immediately and make any necessary changes on the set, saving time and money. At Seagate, we're excited about our partnership with Ngee Ann Polytechnic School of Film and Media Studies, because we're helping nurture the creative visions and technical skills of tomorrow's top film talent."
Chirico added that by combining a community service program with documentary filmmaking - an area that relatively few students choose to pursue - Seagate and Ngee Ann Polytechnic can help foster a greater sense of community involvement among tomorrow's filmmakers.
Students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Film and Media Studies have seen their work lauded by the Singapore Film Festival Silver Screen Awards, Asiana Short Film Festival, and other international film events. The school's commitment to developing professional filmmakers and efforts in community service expeditions are two key factors that led to Seagate's decision to support the school's endeavors.
"Our primary role extends beyond the classroom and to real-world environments that are crucial for developing the story-telling skills of our students," said Jerome Lo, lecturer and Digital Media Section Manager with Ngee Ann Polytechnic. "We appreciate and value the proactive role Seagate takes in supporting the educational development of our students."
As part of its sponsorship package, Seagate will donate 30 Barracuda 7200.9 hard drives to Ngee Ann Polytechnic's production and editing labs, along with eight 100GB Portable Hard Drives and four 400GB External Drives for the school's digital effects studio.
"We expect a future increase in demand for digital media content such as animation, digital special effects and motion graphics creation for broadcast," said Lo. "This means that more resources such as high-speed storage capacity (up to six times more storage) are required for these aspects of film and video production. With these new hard drives from Seagate, we believe that our School of Film and Media Studies is poised to better prepare our students for future film careers, through innovative educational programs, backed by high- performance storage solutions."
Planning for the overseas documentary - community service film expedition is underway, and is expected to take place by the first quarter of 2006.
