MicronPC Ships Serial ATA PC To Customers

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - Seagate said today that MicronPC is shipping one of the world's first PCs to feature Serial ATA hard drive technology - a faster, simpler, more intelligent technology that replaces the Parallel ATA hard drive interface. MPC's Millennia 910i desktop employs the industry's first PC hard drive with a native Serial ATA architecture: the Seagate Barracuda ATA V, featuring 7,200-rpm spin speed and large 8MB onboard cache. Offering up to 120 Gbytes of Seagate Serial ATA storage, the Millenia 910i can be configured with up to two Seagate hard drives for Serial ATA RAID 1, 0 (Redundant Array of Independent Discs), which provides customers with either increased performance and storage capacity, or redundant protection of the user's data.

"Seagate has been dedicated to developing Serial ATA technology that we could integrate into our Millennia product line," said Paul Peterson, vice president of product marketing and product development at MicronPC. "Millennia desktops provide customers with cutting-edge performance and speed, and Serial ATA is a key component in delivering the innovative, new technology that allows for increased processor speed, superior data integrity and system reliability. At MicronPC, we're excited to bring the Serial ATA advantage to our government and mid-market business customers."

Seagate Serial ATA architecture allows for faster PC hard drives, with intelligent data handling and point-to-point connections that eliminate device bus sharing that can increase overhead and reduce performance. With 150 Mbytes-per-second external burst transfers today, Serial ATA drives and RAID systems are up to 50 percent faster than the previous standard. Serial ATA also provides performance scalability to enable faster transfer speeds into the future.

Equally important, Serial ATA provides enhanced reliability and improved data integrity for desktop and mobile PCs. 32-bit Cyclic Redundancy Checking protects data, command and status information, more robust cabling improves overall system reliability, and smaller cables enable improved airflow for all components within the system. Serial ATA also provides greater ease of use so upgrades and maintenance are easier than ever. Hot-plug connectivity can mean greater productivity when reconfiguring a PC system, and snap-in connectors and longer, thinner cables make routing easier.

Thanks to Seagate's patented SoftSonic(tm) Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor, the Barracuda ATA V is the quietest PC hard drive available. Seagate invented the FDB motor for hard drives, and has shipped more FDB motors than all other drive makers combined. Also featuring Seagate's exclusive 3D Defense System(tm), Barracuda ATA V offers a superior combination of performance, quiet operation and ruggedness.

The MicronPC Millennia 910i also features an Intel(r) Pentium(r) 4 processor with 3.06GHz and includes Intel's Hyper-Threading technology, providing exceptional performance and capability. These components merge Serial ATA, the most advanced PC storage technology, with superior memory, graphics and audio technology, and provide cutting-edge performance, headroom and multimedia capability. The Millennia 910i is available in the Professional, Creative Studio and Xtreme Series.
