This is the second consecutive year that Seagate has supported the RoboCup Thailand Championship - a competition whereby Thai students demonstrate their capabilities and skills in developing various mechanical parts and systems to build and operate robots in a "soccer" game.
For the winner, the judging committee awarded the cash prize of 100,000 baht to Plasma-Z from Chulalongkorn University. The Plasma-Z team will also represent Thailand at the World RoboCup 2004 held in Portugal in July this year.
Other prizes were also awarded. The second-place the Little Dragonfly team, was from Thamasat University. The team received a cash prize of 50,000 baht.
The third-place team, which won the best technique award, was Team name ITE-Gold1 from the King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang. The team received a cash prize of 30,000 baht.
Dr.Kamolphan DechaUmpai, executive director of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Department, Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited said, "Seagate is proud to be the main sponsor of the event. This is an important event for young students to learn to work with sophisticated technology and mechanics in a positive, competitive environment. It's a valuable learning experience for everyone involved."
"The cooperation between Seagate, the Thai Robotics Society, and the King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang in hosting RoboCup Thailand Championship aims to develop the capabilities of Thai students in electronics and robotics. Moreover, they will be provided with the opportunity to take part in an international arena and learn from robotics experts worldwide."
Associate Professor Dr. Manukid Parnichkun, president of the Thai Robotics Society, said, "The Thai Robotics Society realizes the importance of enhancing students' capabilities in robotics. We think that the Robocup Thailand Championship will be another stepping stone for Thai students to improve their abilities and widen their experiences in the international arena. During the past 2-3 years, Thai teams have participated in certain international contests such as the Robo Festa 2001 held in Japan and RoboCup 2003 held in Italy. The opportunity of this year's winning team to take part in the worldwide RoboCup 2004 competition in Portugal will help to demonstrate their aptitude and widen their vision on science and technology."
Thai Robotics Society (TRS) was established in 2000 by groups of robotic experts, researchers, and industrial people, involved in robotic education and applications. They are interested in developing technology and research in robotics as well as some robotic related activities in the Kingdom of Thailand.
1. Promote, publicize and enhance public understanding towards robotics technology,
2. Promote, support and initiate academic activities, leading to development of robotic technology,
3. Disseminate robotics standard and safety to local industry,
4. Serve as a center of excellence, conducting R&D in robotics as well as transferring technology and information,
5. Facilitate intensive collaboration among members,
6. Provide liaison advice to both local and multinational entities, and
7. Be a vehicle, propelling academic consortiums that promote graduate i.e. Master and PhD programs in robotics and automation.
