Seagate's Multi-Cultural Employees to Establish Longest 'Lo Hei' Record at New Manufacturing Facility to Usher in Prosperity

SINGAPORE - On the seventh day of the lunar calendar, multi-cultural Seagate employees will establish the longest 'Lo Hei' record at its new manufacturing plant at Woodlands with the tossing of the traditional raw fish salad or 'yu sheng' to usher in prosperity. The 'Lo Hei' celebration will be the first of its kind at Seagate.

Measuring an entire length of 118 meters, the festive 'Lo Hei' line will come shaped in the form of an auspicious dragon made up of 4 kg of smoked salmon, 72 kg of vegetables, 824 kg of garnish and 20 kg of sauces. The last known 'Lo Hei' record was a 63-meter dragon set in 1999 by a group of 40 professional chefs.

Translated, 'Lo Hei' stands for 'stirring up prosperity' involving the traditional Chinese ceremony of tossing and eating 'yu sheng' to bring in luck within the 15 days of the new lunar year. The Seagate 'Lo Hei' celebration falls on February 15, which is also the seventh day of the lunar year or 'Ren Ri'.

As the Chinese believe that 'Ren Ri' is the universal birthday for everyone, it is apt that Seagate chooses to celebrate this occasion with every employee, including Malay and Indian employees, from both of its facilities at Woodlands.

The 'Lo Hei' celebration is part of Seagate's ongoing efforts to bring its culturally diverse employees together in appreciation of one another's culture," says Reza Nikfar, plant manager of Seagate's recording media operations at Woodlands. "Aside from the record-breaking attempt, the act of tossing for luck is auspicious for our new plant too!"

Accompanying the celebration will be a lion and dragon dance, as well as an appearance by the God of Fortune who will hand out 'lucky' prizes to employees.

In the past, Seagate has been organizing company-wide activities to cater to its culturally diverse employees with celebrations such as Hari Raya, Deepavali and Christmas.
