In today's competitive hard disc drive industry, with capacity and interface upgrades occurring almost simultaneously among the major drive manufacturers, robustness-or the amount of non-operational shock a drive can withstand-is becoming a key area of differentiation for disc drive purchasers.
According to Dexheimer, "In an independent brand research study performed in 1998, resellers ranked reliability as the number one most influential feature in recommending a product, outweighing even such attributes as performance and price."
These industry-leading specs have been established through a number of design enhancements in the drive's read-write heads, suspension, and actuator.
The expanded SeaShield System will ship with Seagate's new Medalist 17242 and U4 product families and future products as well. Features include:
Seagate's newly expanded SeaShield System also adds a diagnostic tool called Drive Self Test (DST) to its suite of features, starting with the Medalist 17242 and U4 families. DST protects users' data by enabling a customer to test and diagnose a drive before removing it from the system and risking data loss. The result of many years of engineering analysis and development, DST has been incorporated into the drives' firmware. It is expected to dramatically reduce the number of drives returned to Seagate with "no trouble found," and to enable users to preserve their data intact by preventing returns for non-disc related problems.
The SeaShield System ships with all new Seagate desktop drives. These expanded features for improved robustness and reduced returns are incorporated into the new Medalist 17242 and U4 product families, and will be incorporated into future product families as well.
