Seagate's New Medalist SL Drive Provides 1.28-GBytes of Desktop System Storage

Technology, Inc. (NYSE: SEG) today announced the latest addition to its desktop product line of Fast ATA-2 disc drives which will begin shipping in volume later this quarter. The Medalist 1270sl provides 1.28-Gbytes of formatted capacity in a slim-line (19 mm high) form factor offering a unique blend of capacity, performance, and value sought by today's desktop computing environment.

The two-platter Medalist 1270sl is the third generation of Seagate's award winning slim-line desktop product family and features a high-performance 5,400-rpm design with a 10.5-millisecond average seek time. Leveraging Seagates design and manufacturing expertise, the Medalist 1270sl utilizes thin-film heads and media, peak detect read channel technology, and a reduced number of components to produce a quick-to-volume, cost-effective product for the value-oriented desktop market.

"Today's users of data-intensive operating systems like Windows 95 need high capacity and exceptional disc drive performance to take advantage of new features and applications," said Phil Detwiler, Seagate's vice president of Marketing. "The Medalist 1270sl is the perfect solution, offering ample room for installation of the operating system and applications, and providing plenty of performance to enjoy multimedia-rich programs. In addition, the Medalist 1270sl is capable of meeting the demands of audio/video, the Internet, and multitasking 32-bit applications that require both speed and capacity."

"OEM customer requirements for disc capacity continue to grow," said Brian Dexheimer, Seagate's senior director of Desktop Product Marketing. "Many of our OEM customers are shipping 200-400-Mbytes of bundled applications on their retail systems, and they need high capacity drives for their desktop products."

The Medalist 1270sl features sustained data transfer rates of 3.5-Mbytes per second, and a Fast ATA-2 interface enabling burst data transfer rates of up to 16.6-Mbytes per second. Speed and data throughput translate into a multimedia-ready drive that supports full screen, full motion video on desktop computer systems with compression algorithms such as MPEG. The 1.2-Gbyte capacity of the Medalist 1270sl complements high quality audio and video data files, which consume substantial amounts of disc space.

The slim-line, 19 mm high drive is further enhanced by industry-leading low-noise acoustics, and low power consumption for Energy Star compliant systems. The Medalist 1270sl will ship with Windows 95 and WindowsNT certification, and includes a three-year limited warranty.
