Seagate Recognizes Employees for Contributing to Environmental, Health and Safety

More than 100 employees of Penang Seagate Industries (M) Sdn Bhd were feted at a dinner to reward them for their commitment in maintaining consistently high environmental health and safety (EH&S) standards in their workplace.

Also present at the EH&S appreciation dinner were officers from the Penang Municipal Council, State Traffic Police, Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Road Safety Council, and Fire and Rescue Department.

"This night of appreciation is Seagate's way of showing gratitude to our EH&S teams and other employees who help ensure our factory's 3,000 employees have a safe work environment," said John Marshall, Penang Seagate's vice president. "The existence of these teams reflects Seagate's ongoing commitment to the well-being of our employees and preserving the environment."

Presently, there are 150 employees who volunteer for the company's Emergency Response Team, Hazardous Waste Minimization Team, Solid Waste Recycling Team, Safety and Health Committee, Behaviour-Based Safety Steering Committee and Ergonomics Team. Certificates of appreciation were presented to these employees during the dinner.

"Penang Seagate places a strong emphasis on EH&S, and we encourage employees to participate in activities related to work-place safety enhancement and recycling," said Marshall.

For example, hazardous-waste generation has been reduced by almost 17 percent in the past year, while non-recyclable solid waste was reduced by 46 percent. "We plan to further improve this performance next year," Marshall added.

Recently, the company integrated an ergonomics program throughout the factory, in which all employees were trained in ergonomics awareness and participated in developing action plans.

From a health perspective, a nine-month wellness program called "Lose Weight, Feel Great" resulted in an average of 75 percent improvement in participating employees' hypertension, cholesterol and blood- sugar levels.

The company's commitment to EH&S also extends to training the bus drivers who transport Seagate employees from as far as Baling, Kedah and Semanggol, Perak.

"Safety training for these drivers is conducted throughout the year, including defensive driving and first aid," said Marshall. "In fact, Penang Seagate's best-in-class bus-safety management system has been used as a benchmark by other global Seagate sites."

Seagate also recently launched a contractor-safety program, and to-date there has been zero incidents involving contractors.

Penang Seagate's other notable EH&S achievements during the year include: four teams winning Seagate's global President's Drive to EHS Excellence Award in 2005; organising a recycling campaign that netted 25,000kg of recyclable paper and helped purchase four prosthetic legs for three community residents; and successfully achieving an accident-free workplace during the last six months.
