Seagate, Thai Robotics Society and Sripatum University's Faculty of Informatic to Hold Robocup Thailand Championship 2007

Seagate Technology (NYSE:STX), the world's leading supplier of hard disc drives, is working with the Thai Robotics Society (TRS) and Sripatum University's Faculty of Informatic in organizing the 2007 Robocup Thailand Championship.

"We are very pleased that Seagate is supporting this competition for the fifth consecutive year," said Associate Professor Dr. Prabhas Chongstitvatana, president of TRS. "The technologies used in this competition will help prepare students for careers in today's advanced automated manufacturing environments. Such events also develop the necessary teamwork and problem-solving skills that companies value."

Interested applicants may apply through October 30 by sending a video to the judging committee. Announcement of the top 20 teams will be made on November 22. The teams will practice on January 10-11, 2007 and compete in the finals on January 12-14 in Bangkok.

"Sripatum University takes pride in cooperating with TRS and Seagate to host the 2007 Robocup Thailand Championship, " said Prof. Dr. Suchai Thanawastien, dean, Faculty of Informatic, Sripatum University. "The university has developed courses to drive the government's vision in making Thailand the center of robotic engineering innovation of the future. "

As the main sponsor of this competition, Seagate provides the cash prize of 200,000 baht to the winning team. This team will also be sponsored by Seagate to represent Thailand at the World Robocup 2007 in the U.S. in July.

"Seagate's sponsorship of 1.7 million baht for Robocup Thailand Championship 2007 underlines our commitment to support science and technology development projects," said Boonyong Danthainam, Seagate's vice president of Thailand/Penang human resources. "This contest will encourage the next generation of young innovators to use various types of theoretical knowledge for automation and robotics."

Last year, Plasma Z team of Chulalongkorn University won third place and also the Technical Challenge Award at the World Robocup 2006 event in Germany. This team proved itself to be at par with some of the leading robotics teams in the world.

Robocup Thailand Championship 2007 is an automatic robot contest that uses high technologies such as electronic vision systems, wireless communications and artificial intelligence Thai nationals studying for their bachelors' degree or higher are eligible to apply. Each team should consist of three members and one advisor. Each robot team may have a maximum of 10 supporting members.
