Mr. Brent Bargmann, vice president of Seagate Thailand operations said, "Seagate and Khon Kaen University have a long and successful history of technological collaboration. This research laboratory will help strengthen our joint efforts in applied manufacturing research for recording head technology."
The lab's research plan is to use system level technology and a systems research approach to broaden students' knowledge and expertise. The lab will also be a shared resource for both Seagate and students of Khon Kaen University who will be working together on many shared projects.
"Seagate realizes the importance of technological development in Thailand, especially for recording head technology," Bargmann added. "The Company, in conjunction with Khon Kaen University's Faculty of Engineering, has set up this research laboratory with the goal of supporting the learning and applied research of recording head technology. This applied research laboratory is an example of cooperation between the private sector and universities for technological advancement."
Currently, hard drive and other related industries play major roles in the Thai economy by employing more than 300,000 people and generating income worth more than 200,000 million baht annually. Cooperation between the industrial sector and universities offers opportunities to further develop and drive future growth in the industry.
Associate Prof. Dr. Winit Chinsuwan, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, said, "The idea of opening a research laboratory between Khon Kaen University and Seagate was born out of cooperative efforts between the Department of Electrical Engineering and Seagate which began over three years ago. The success of our joint effort has led to the establishment of Khon Kaen's research laboratory, and most importantly, the transfer of advance technology to the educational sector in Thailand. The Faculty of Engineering, realizing the importance of research and development, enthusiastically supports construction of this research laboratory.
"These efforts clearly align academic research with the industrial sector, preparing Thailand's next generation of technology innovators," Winit added.
Associate Prof. Dr. Sumon Sakolchai, Rector of Khon Kaen University said, "Khon Kaen University policy is to support both theoretical and applied research. Applied research is a shared effort between the private sector and academia and will remain an educational priority of Khon Kaen University."
