Seagate Brings A Splash Of Color To The Lives Of 60 Children From The Singapore Children's Society

SINGAPORE - 60 children from the Singapore Children's Society (SCS) will find food, fun and excitement at a surprise "Rainbow Party" organized for them by volunteers from disc drive company Seagate Technology, in celebration of Children's Day on October 1. The event promises to be a riot of color and activity, as each child will come dressed in one of the many colors of the rainbow.

Seagate employees have volunteered to chaperone and assume the role of game masters at the party that brings together children from the Henderson Student Care Centre and the Convalescent Home, two of SCS' social services.

The Henderson Student Care Centre provides before- and after-care services to primary school children from low-income families while the Convalescent Home offers protection and care to children who are abused or neglected.

"Each of us has a part to play in shaping a child's future," said Ms Hong Kim Beng, head of the Henderson Student Care Centre. "These children need our assistance and we are grateful that Seagate has contributed so much to create a positive impact in their lives. This is not the first time that Seagate has kindly extended their generosity to our children and we are happy that corporate organizations like Seagate are chipping in to help the community."

The children will get to enjoy activities such as balloon sculpting performances and an on-the-spot art contest in addition to trying out six stations featuring different fun games promoting teamwork and interaction.

Since 2001, Seagate has worked with SCS on programs and activities aimed at increasing the self-esteem and furthering the knowledge and skills of disadvantaged children, enabling them to lead normal, productive lives.

Past activities organized for SCS by Seagate include educational excursions to the Company's Ang Mo Kio manufacturing facility, the Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve, the Farm-Mart Centre and the Singapore Science Centre. Regular reading sessions have also been conducted on weekends to help children develop a better understanding of the English language. Additionally, Seagate has offered movie outings for the children during the school holidays.

Besides organizing activities for SCS, Seagate also helped raised S$6,000 in textbook funds for the children from the Henderson Student Care Centre; and proceeds of S$40,000 through a charity golf event that went towards upgrading the facilities of and fee subsidies for the children at both the Henderson Centre and Convalescent Home.

Seagate's community involvement helps to create and support programs that make a difference and enhance the quality of life for the communities in which employees live and work. These programs cover areas such as education, sports, health and the welfare of the socially disadvantaged.

A long-term perspective has been taken for Seagate's corporate giving program in Singapore, fostering a healthy balance between its professional performance and Seagate's duty as a responsible corporate citizen. Seagate has demonstrated its commitment to the community through donations of cash, furniture, computer and office equipment, as well as encouragement of employee volunteerism for community efforts in countries such as China, Australia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Cambodia and Singapore.
