Seagate Cultivates Performing Artists in Underprivileged Children through Drama Workshops

Seagate Technology is sponsoring a unique educational program aimed at improving young students' communication skills and self-confidence through the arts.

Over the next three months, Seagate will sponsor the Singapore Children's Society's Henderson Student Care Centre's weekly drama workshops for children from lower-income backgrounds. The workshops are conducted by the ACT 3 Drama Academy, whose experienced teachers use the arts to encourage creativity and self-expression.

"Learning outside the traditional classroom setting through the arts is important to a child's personal development," says Jim Chirico, senior vice president and general manager of Seagate's Global Disc Drive Operations. "As a globally diverse company that depends on teamwork and creative thinking to help solve complex problems, Seagate is a strong supporter of innovative educational programs that are open to students from all backgrounds."

The workshops develop three core areas- language development, social interaction and drama skills. The workshops will introduce students to role-playing, improvisation and negotiation techniques that are essential for productive team discussion. During the 15 sessions, students will learn the skills necessary to stage a play, culminating in a celebration concert for employees of Seagate in December.

"Arts and culture can help students develop their creativity, imaginations and communication skills," said Ms. Hong Kim Beng, head of the Henderson Student Care Centre. "And because drama is interactive, it further enables students to learn and work together as a group. It says a lot about Seagate as a company that it supports and values this kind of educational effort."

The sponsorship is part of Seagate's on-going partnership with Henderson Centre. Since 2001, Seagate has worked with the Centre to develop educational and enrichment programs, and provide financial assistance for underprivileged children. This year, Seagate donated S$8,000 for the Centre's students to purchase textbooks and uniforms.

Seagate's local community involvement efforts are part of the company's global citizenship program to make a positive difference in all the communities where it operates. Its community involvement program traditionally supports science, math and technology education. Seagate also directs its efforts toward enhancing the health, development, enrichment and diversity of communities through cash and in-kind product contributions, donations of excess computers, office and lab equipment and by encouraging employee volunteerism.
