Seagate Donation Supports Polish President's Initiative -- Internet at Schools

WARSAW - Seagate Technology today announced its participation in a project "Internet At Schools" initiated by the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr Aleksander Kwasniewski. Seagate will equip computers donated to Polish schools with its high quality U Series 5 hard disc drives, enabling students to store, access and manage the Internet's information to further their educations and quest for knowledge.

"Even with government financial support, there are still a large number of schools in Poland which do not have the financial resources to establish computer labs connected to the Internet," said Don Kennedy, vice president, Sales and Marketing, for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Seagate Technology. "These laboratories are an extremely important and useful tool in the process of equalising opportunities for young people, and Seagate is very pleased to participate in this first-of-its-kind national initiative. Preparing for life in the Internet age is a crucial task for education systems in the European Community countries. As Poland also applies to be part of the EU, we understand the need to develop these technical resources."

The "Internet At Schools" project undertakes the following steps:
7 Equip schools with 10 multimedia computers working in a local network
7 Connect the laboratories to the Internet
7 Install software
7 Organise Internet training for teachers
7 Transfer used computer hardware to other educational institutions such as centres for disabled children and orphanages.

In order to obtain an Internet laboratory, each school should meet certain criteria, including number of students and laboratory utilisation plan. Schools from economically weaker regions are also given special consideration.

Among the most critical requirements that school and local authorities should meet are:
7 A detailed plan for using the Internet in the educational process
7 Laboratory furniture and power outlets
7 Laboratory security and equipment insurance
7 A skilled instructor with a diploma or postgraduate course in computer science.

Seagate is participating in the project "Internet At Schools" in conjunction with Action, one of its Premium Partners in Poland, as well as other leading technology companies.
