The computer lab was officially launched with much fanfare today in a ceremony attended by Guest-of-Honour, Puan Maznah bte Abu Bakar, Ketua Sektor 3P, official representative of the Johor State Director of Education, Seagate representatives, and more than 300 academic and non-academic staff and students. Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar is the first school in Johor Bahru to receive such a donation from a private organisation towards the opening on its computer lab.
This donation, which forms a part of Seagate's community support programme, was lauded by Tuan Haji Kassim bin Sudin, Principal of Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar. He said, "We are very glad to receive Seagate assistance in setting up this PC Centre. The PC is the very symbol of today's exciting IT economy. This centre will be essential in exposing our students to the IT-driven future and providing them with a more interactive, fun and well-rounded education."
Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar, formerly known as English College, is the oldest college in Johor Bahru. From its initial enrolment of 21 students when the school was established in 1914, Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar now teaches some 1,645 students. The college adopts an aggressive IT literacy programme where all its Form 1 students take compulsory lessons on basic PC usage. Teachers actively encourage students to use the PC and the Internet to enhance their learning. Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar also has an active Computer Club. The new PC Centre will enable more students to use the PC more regularly. The new PC Centre will also enable the school to accelerate its e-learning vision to conduct lessons online using PCs and the Internet.
In addition to IT equipment and software, Seagate contributed the necessary tables, cushioned chairs and cupboards to fully set up the PC Centre. Moreover, Seagate also pledged significant help in terms of 'heartware' the time and energy Seagate staffers commit to support the school's programs. Some ten Seagate staff members had been involved actively in setting up the PC Centre since August 2002. This included the transportation of the PCs, setting up the systems and network, and the installation of software. Members of Seagate's IT staff also volunteered to contribute their time to teach basic PC skills to the students.
"We continually look for opportunities to serve our community. By providing these children with the means to develop their interest and knowledge, we hope to potentially create a future generation of technology savvy individuals," said Chee Teck Huei, vice president of Operations, Senai Seagate Industries (M) Sdn. Bhd. "Seagate is committed to bringing technology closer to the community and providing the means to accelerate IT learning. We see this as a meaningful gesture on our part which will contribute to Malaysia's technology growth and information technology literacy."
Seagate is also looking to contribute more to Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar. This includes plans in the pipeline to implement training on basic web development skills, a science quiz, donation of printers and a field trip to Seagate's manufacturing plants.
One of Seagate's corporate goals is to be a good corporate citizen in the communities in which its employees live and work. In a recent community project in June 2002, 15 Seagate staff brought 40 children from the Singapore Children Society to the nature park and farm in Singapore.
