Seagate Drives Temasek Polytechnic's Bioinformatics Laboratory

SINGAPORE - Seagate Technology announced today that it is providing high performance Cheetah and Barracuda disc drives for Temasek Polytechnic's Bioinformatics (Bio-IT) laboratory. Bio-IT is the use of information technology to create, organize, analyze, store, retrieve and share genomic, proteomic, chemical and clinical data in the life sciences.

"As an example of emerging new age industries where multi-disciplinary fields play a key role, the Biomedical Informatics and Engineering lab supports the Economic Development Board's vision to develop Singapore into a world-class life sciences hub and a regional centre for clinical trials and drug development," said Michael Ko, course manager (Biomedical Information and Engineering) of Temasek Polytechnic. "Because storage is essential for our Bioinformatics lab, we choose Seagate's proven and reliable disc drives to provide the leading-edge storage technology that is so integral for today's Bio-IT world."

As a leading provider of storage technology, Seagate has built a solid reputation with consistently fast and reliable disc drives over the years. Seagate enterprise disc drives - Cheetah and Barracuda family - are among the fastest and most reliable in the industry. Cheetah and Barracuda drives offer leading edge technologies for Internet, server and A/V applications, and now serve as key enabling technology at the center of Temasek Polytechnic's Bioinformatics lab.

According to analysis from IDC, the Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) Bio-IT market could increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 56% to reach US$3.6 billion by 2006. According to IDC, many countries in the region are investing heavily to position themselves as major players in the global biosciences industry. Factors driving this growth include rapid acceptance of new methods in biological research and development and informatics-based drug design.

Temasek Polytechnic is among the first to offer a structured program in the field of Biomedical Informatics integrated with Biomedical Engineering, and is setting up its first Bioinformatics lab on the school campus.
