Seagate Employees Get Together To Bring Cheer To Autistic Children

PENANG, Malaysia - Penang Seagate Industries (M) Sdn Bhd recently donated educational toys and computers to the Penang Autistic Center as part of the Company's ongoing effort to make a positive difference in the community here.

"The children are having so much fun with the equipment, and we are very grateful to Seagate," said R.Ganges, Penang Autistic Center coordinator, in her thank you note to the staff of Penang Seagate Industries.

John Marshall, vice president and general manager of Penang Seagate Industries said that the employees were very generous in their contributions to ensure that this donation was a success. "The funding came from three major sources. Firstly, we had a Paper Recycling Campaign some time ago and from the sale of recyclable print material brought in by employees, we started a fund. Next, the employees further chipped in with cash contributions and to top that off, Seagate matched the Paper Recycling Campaign sale collection ringgit for ringgit".

Volunteers who visited the center, not only spent time helping fix up the play equipment and distributing other goodies but also joined in the outdoor play sessions and helped the children with the computer lessons.

"The outdoor play equipment is important in helping the children build their motor skills and it is really good to see them having fun with the toys", said Seagate volunteer Tang Meh Li, an industrial engineer.

"The new computers now replace the faulty ones and the children have more opportunities to play with interactive games on an individual basis," said another volunteer Rajagopal Suppiah, an engineering specialist with the maintenance department. Seagate's IT technicians helped set up the computers in the center's computer lab.

The donation to the Penang Autistic Center is the first in a series of donations the Company will make to three organizations over the next four months.

"This year our community service efforts will focus on education as compared to last year when we took a big lead in environmental awareness by co-organizing a series of camps with the Department of Environment," said Marshall.

"Our employees have always stepped forward to help and the string of volunteers is endless. With community service being an integral part of Seagate's corporate values, we want to continue to make a positive impact in the community that we operate in," he added.
