The assortment of new Seagate drives include: high-performance mainstream 15K-rpm models designed for the fastest I/O performance and highest reliability; 10K-rpm high-capacity drives for entry-server and workstation use; and the world's first one-half Terabyte capacity drive for near-line storage at lower costs than traditional enterprise drives. In addition, Seagate has announced the general availability of Savvio - the world's smallest enterprise drive designed to meet I/O performance challenges head-on in its compact 2.5-inch size.

Seagate continues to lead the Enterprise space, and the new products are focused on delivering the features and benefits that matter most to its customers. This includes delivering solutions focused on providing the world's highest reliability, with industry-leading areal densities, the fastest performance and a range of form-factor sizes and interface choices to satisfy every possible enterprise requirement. No other company is as well-equipped to provide the robust level of enterprise storage choices as Seagate.

"Data centers face a growing set of challenges, including satisfying bulk storage requirements, simplifying data management, meeting service levels of high I/O transaction processing applications, managing within existing space constraints and minimizing data center cost per square foot," said Dave Reinsel, program director of storage research at IDC. "Seagate's broad portfolio of enterprise drives enables solution providers and IT managers to satisfy a myriad of unique and challenging storage requirements within the data center."

NL35 Series

Seagate's new NL35 Series is the world's first one-half Terabyte disc drive designed specifically for cost-effective tiered near-line storage. A new class of storage has risen to fill the gap between primary and archive storage. The foundation of this near-line storage is high capacity, low cost per gigabyte, reliable disc drives with Fibre Channel or Serial ATA interfaces. Seagate's NL35 Series disc drive product family was designed to provide the ultimate in near-line storage solutions.

The Seagate NL35 Series 500GB Fibre Channel disc drive enables cost-effective, tiered storage solutions designed to manage data based on response and availability requirements. The NL35 Series delivers seamless near-line storage on existing Fibre Channel SANS with no additional hardware or changes to storage software needed.

The applications for near-line storage include: disc-to-disc backup/storage recovery, virtual tape backup/storage recovery, fixed content-addressed storage for image and document management and lower-tiered storage of regulatory compliance or other business data. Seagate's NL35 Series disc drive facilitates faster, more reliable backup/recovery for systems at lower overall cost versus traditional tape systems.

Cheetah 15K.4

The Cheetah 15K.4 is the best price-per-performance disc drive from Seagate, benefiting from the experience acquired from more than four generations of Cheetah 15K-rpm products. With the Cheetah 15K.4's high-performance and reliability, it is designed as the mainstream enterprise drive of choice for use in today's most critical I/O-intensive data centers.

The Cheetah 15K.4 disc drive delivers 30 percent more I/Os per second and 20 percent faster response times than 3.5-inch 10K-rpm drives. As a result, the Cheetah 15K.4 enables higher performance with fewer drives, which means lower total cost of ownership.

Cheetah 15K.4 drive will offer a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface. A single SAS storage subsystem will house Seagate's low cost $/GB Serial ATA (SATA) drives used for near-line storage in the same enclosure as the ideal 3.5-inch enterprise disc drive, the Cheetah 15K.4, used for online storage. SAS's point-to-point, full duplex architecture and 3.0Gb/s transfer speed coupled with Cheetah 15K.4 I/O performance enable the fastest, lowest cost of ownership, storage solutions.

The Cheetah 15K.4 is offered in capacities of 36, 73, and 147GBs, and is the industry's first 15K-rpm drive to include a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rating of 1.4 million hours. MTBF testing was conducted at Full Duty cycles (24 x 7) that ensure the 15K.4 is rated for true enterprise workloads.

Cheetah 10K.7

For the 10K-rpm 3.5-inch class, Seagate offers the Cheetah 10K.7 - the highest capacity 10K-rpm enterprise disc drive ever offered by Seagate. Cheetah 10K.7 drives are designed for applications that have lower access density requirements and excel in environments where reliability is paramount.

The Seagate Cheetah 10K.7 is the new benchmark for high capacity enterprise-class disc drives, providing up to 300GBs in a low-profile, 3.5-inch form factor. The seventh generation of the award-winning Cheetah line of 10K-rpm drives, the Cheetah 10K.7 delivers very high capacity and superior reliability to the lower access enterprise applications.

The Cheetah 10K.7 drive meets this challenge by leveraging many reliability features from the Cheetah 15K.4 drive, including fluid dynamic bearings, enhanced data integrity/error recovery procedures and a background media scan feature that reduces integration failures and improves field reliability. Despite these many improvements, the Cheetah 10K.7 maintains the same power, shock and acoustic characteristics of its 10K.6 predecessor.

The Cheetah 10K.7 disc drive is offered in capacities of 73, 146, and 300GBs, and includes a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rating of 1.4 million hours. MTBF testing was conducted at Full Duty cycles (24 x 7) that ensures the 10K.7 is rated for true enterprise workloads.

The Seagate NL35 will begin shipping calendar Q4. The Seagate Cheetah 10K.7 will begin shipping calendar Q3. The Seagate Cheetah 15K.4 will begin shipping calendar Q3 first with a Fibre Channel and Ultra320 SCSI interface. SAS-equipped Cheetah 15K.4 drives will begin shipping calendar Q4.
