Seagate Introduces First-of-its-Kind DiscWizard Software for User Friendly Disc Drive Installation

Seagate Technology, Inc. (NYSE:SEG), the world's largest independent disc drive manufacturer, today announced a new Windows-based drive installation program called DiscWizard, providing desktop computer users with an easy, menu-driven solution for installing, formatting, and partitioning hard disc drives. Enabling computer users to take full advantage of today's higher capacity disc drives for multimedia, audio/visual and Internet applications, DiscWizard is a revolutionary program which addresses limitations of system BIOS and operating systems that can complicate installation of larger ATA-interface drives.

These higher-capacity drives, while ideal for the upgrade market, often encounter BIOS issues on some computer systems that can hamper installation of ATA-interface drives higher than 2.1 Gbytes in capacity. Bundled with select Seagate Medalist and Medalist Pro ATA-interface disc drives, DiscWizard's advanced partitioning features automatically detect and correct BIOS limitations and intuitively guide the user through a refreshingly-simple, graphical program, eliminating the need for BIOS upgrades or complicated documentation.

"Seagate is continuously looking for ways to enhance and increase the value of its products to end users," said Kevin Perry, manager of Product Marketing for Seagate Technology. "Our customers want disc drives that are easier to install, and DiscWizard is a real breakthrough. Now users can get the bigger, better and faster disc drives they crave without worrying about complicated drive installation."

Developed exclusively for Seagate by ONTRACK Data International, Inc. (formerly Ontrack Computer Systems, Inc.), developers of hard disc installation and utility software, DiscWizard is a suite of software programs designed to analyze a computer system and create a set of tailor-made, step-by-step instructions that walk the user through the disc drive installation.

"We are pleased to have collaborated with Seagate on the development of DiscWizard," said John Pence, president of ONTRACK Data International, Inc. "As the industry's first Windows-based drive installation utility, DiscWizard allows end users to conveniently access the full capabilities of their Seagate drive." DiscWizard is the perfect complement for users interested in upgrading or adding a second drive to their desktop computer system because the software works in conjunction with an existing drive. Prior to installation, DiscWizard analyzes key characteristics such as the capabilities of the system BIOS, and asks the user a series of questions about the desired configuration of the system to create a set of detailed, customized instructions for installation that takes the burden off of the user. In addition, DiscWizard features an extensive on-line help system available to users throughout the installation process.

"By adding DiscWizard, Seagate simplifies the potentially complex integration issues that surround upgrading to high capacity desktop hard disc drives," said Crawford Del Prete, vice president of International Data Corporation Storage Research Program. "Over the past 12 months, drive suppliers have effectively doubled the average capacity of a PC-class disc drive through a combination of areal density improvements and three-platter designs. The net result is that end users can now purchase hard drives at capacity points far beyond what systems designers initially anticipated."

Seagate is offering the entire DiscWizard program suite on one 3.5-inch floppy diskette that contains the following utilities: DiscWizard Application, DiscWizard Uninstaller, DiscWizard File Copy (for migrating files between drives), DiscWizard CD-Update (for updating CD-ROM drive letter designations), Seagate 32-Bit Driver (for use with Windows), and Disk Manager. (to overcome legacy BIOS limitations). DiscWizard will accompany all Medalist/Medalist Pro drives sold through the retail channel, and Medalist/Medalist Pro drives greater than 2.1 Gbytes in capacity sold through Seagate's distribution channel. Availability is scheduled for August, 1996. Seagate will continue to ship Ontrack's Disk Manager on Medalist/Medalist Pro disc drives under 2.1 Gbytes into the distribution channel.
