Seagate Joins Effort To Save China's National Treasure

BEIJING - Seagate Technology is providing much-needed support to the Protect The Environment, Save The Panda program, in conjunction with the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, to conserve this country's national treasure.

"Seagate's sponsorship will provide us with a significant boost to our center's pioneering effort in re-introducing captive bred pandas into the wild," said Zhang GuiQuan, deputy director of the center. "With the giant panda's low productive capacity and their dwindling population in the wild, it is clear that the giant panda is heading for extinction in the next century unless steps are taken to reverse this trend. Our center has great success in breeding captive giant pandas. Our project will allow us to strengthen the gene pool and facilitate an increase in the wild giant panda population."

Currently there are less than 1,000 giant pandas in the world, with more than 80% found in China's Sichuan province. The center's successful breeding program accounts for 50% of the captive-bred giant pandas in China.

"Seagate appreciates the center's dedication to excellence and creativity which make them a leader in their field," said Teh BanSeng, Seagate vice president, Asia Sales & Marketing. "As a leader in our industry, Seagate understands and supports that commitment. The success of the Center's program will be a giant step towards the longevity of the country's critically endangered national treasure. Seagate's presence in China continues to grow and as a member of the community, we feel compelled to promote conservation as well as economic development for our future generations."

To generate greater awareness of the national cause to protect the giant pandas, Seagate will be extending its Protect the Environment, Save the Panda program to its Chinese customers and resellers through the distribution of its panda beanies with purchase of its storage products.
