Seagate Joins With Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah To Promote Science And Technology At Primary And Secondary Schools In Johor Bahru

Seagate Technology announced it is joining with Pejabat Pendidkan Daerah (PPD) to promote science and technology education amongst primary and secondary schools at the Johor Bahru Science & Technology Roadshow 2003. This year's event is expected to be the largest in the entire five-year history of the annual district fair, and Seagate has been named an Official Technology Partner in Education.

The event will be officiated with much fanfare and ceremonies on May 7 and will be attended by Guest-of-Honour, YB En Md Salikon Bin Sarpin, Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Pembangunan, Usahawan, Industri Kecil dan Sederhana, Sains dan Teknologi and an expected crowd of more than 4,000 academic and non-academic staff and students from the Johor Bahru district.

Seagate is the first private organization to support the event, and the Company was lauded by Tuan Haji Romli bin Abdul Latih, Penolong Pegawai Pendidikan Daerah Sektor Pengurusan Akademik, "Seagate has shown tremendous support for this year's fair and in the process has provided a springboard to inspire many of our budding geniuses. Such enthusiasm is needed to help cultivate a spirit of creativity amongst our younger generation, who will be responsible for much of our country's success in the future."

Since the Johor Bahru Science and Technology Roadshow first started in 1999, its focus has been to develop innovative thinking and invention through science and technology curricular activities. This goal is in line with the country's vision of establishing a climate of scientific creativity in schools. This year's fair alone has attracted participation from more than 200 schools with a record number of 450 primary and 200 secondary school project entries.

Some of the most anticipated competitions that Seagate is directly supporting include:
* Invention Competition for Secondary School;
* Invention Competition for Primary School;
* Science Innovation Competition for Secondary School;
* Science Problem Solving (Reka Sains) Competition for Lower Secondary School;
* Science Problem Solving (Eureka) Competition for Primary School; and
* Teaching Aids Competition for Primary and Secondary School Teachers, which is a new category in this year's fair.

Seagate has also pledged further support for the 11 project teams that will be selected to represent the district in the state competition as well as the team that will eventually move on to represent Johor in the national finals. Seagate's total sponsorship for the Johor Bahru Science & Technology Roadshow 2003 is worth a total of RM 26,000.

"We want to create a positive impact in the community and Seagate's participation in the Science and Technology Roadshow will promote innovation and help nurture future generations of scientists and technologists," said Chee Teck Huei, vice president of Operations, Senai Seagate Industries (M) Sdn. Bhd.

Part of Seagate's corporate mission is to make positive contributions to the communities in which its employees live and work. For example, last September Seagate helped establish a computer lab for Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar, and the Company is now in the second phase of the program to provide comprehensive IT training for staff and students.
