Seagate Leverages Sun Microsystems' JINI(TM) Connective Technology to Deliver Storage Device Intelligence

SAs a critical step in opening new markets for digital storage, Seagate Technology, Inc. (NYSE:SEG) and Sun Microsystems today demonstrated object-oriented storage technology on a disc drive leveraging Sun's Jini distributed systems architecture. Seagate, the world's leading disc drive supplier, will work with the Jini community in the progression of the technology, the first architecture that delivers enhanced networking solutions for all levels of computing. As an early Sun partner in developing Jini capabilities for storage applications, Seagate embraces creating higher levels of device intelligence and supports Sun's open systems approach.

"Seagate's long-standing relationship with Sun has resulted in the early adoption of industry leading high availability technologies including the Single-Connector Attachment (SCA) adapter, the Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop system architecture and ten thousand RPM disc drives," said Nigel Macleod, Seagate's vice president of Advanced Concepts. "Jini is a potentially revolutionary technology which may make the development of new markets for data storage possible. It enables a new class of universal intelligent devices that can provide enhanced services and support distributed applications."

"Seagate is a proven storage leader and the early adoption of Jini technology for their products is evidence of their focus on innovation," said Mark Tolliver, President, Sun's Consumer and Embedded Group. "We are proud to have Seagate among the companies participating in the Jini community."

This year Seagate, along with Sun and its partners will work with early adopters to demonstrate real world applications running on Jini-connected devices.
