Sterling began his storage products career with Control Data Corporation in August, 1979, and came to Seagate with its purchase of Imprimis from CDC in 1989. In nearly 17 years in the industry he has filled a variety of financial positions including director of Finance for Thailand Operations, located in Bangkok as an expatriate from 1994 through 1996. Since his return from Thailand, Sterling has held the position of executive director, Finance, Oklahoma Drive Operations.
Sterling earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.
