Seagate Ships 400GB DB35 Series Hard Drive to Enable High-Definition DVR Recording

LAS VEGAS - Seagate Technology (NYSE: STX), the world's number one provider of hard drives for consumer electronics, announced today at CES it is shipping its new 400GB hard drive for DVR (digital video recorder) and home entertainment systems. The Seagate DB35 Series hard drive is the first drive designed for DVRs to offer up to 44 hours of HDTV recording, 400 hours of standard TV recording, and up to 10 simultaneous standard TV streams with Seagate DynaPlay technology. The new Seagate DB35 Series hard drive offers the industry's largest available capacity for digital video entertainment, enabling new television services such as video on demand, high-definition DVRs, and home media centers.

"High capacity and streaming capabilities found in hard drives such as Seagate's DB35 Series with DynaPlay technology provide an important advantage to TV service providers, allowing consumers to get the most from new HDTV and digital TV services," said John Buttress, IDC research manager for hard drives. "Seagate's technology advantage in data density is leveraged in the DB35 series, which supports advanced features for the growing DVR market, opening new opportunities for the company."

"A significant percentage of DVR households are demanding increased storage capacity on their DVRs," said Mike Paxton, senior analyst at technology research firm In-Stat/MDR. "As viewers become more accustomed to 'time-shifting' their TV programming, they tend to capture and archive an increasing amount of content. Coupled with the rising popularity of storage-intensive HDTV programming, a clear trend in DVR product development is the integration of high-capacity hard drives."

The Seagate DB35 Series hard drive with DynaPlay technology delivers up to 10 simultaneous streams of TV, and lets manufacturers custom-tune the drive for optimal DVR performance. This breakthrough feature set optimizes the drive for video performance, power consumption control and content security. And because it's from Seagate, the drive provides long-haul reliability for worry-free DVR operation, year after year.

Based on direct customer input at its CE Design Service Centers, Seagate develops its DB35 Series hard drives to deliver the features CE manufacturers ask for - quiet acoustics, high reliability and top streaming performance. Seagate's unique Advanced Manufacturing capabilities give customers flexibility; automated factory lines can adapt within hours to meet unexpected requirements during a sudden demand swell for a popular CE system.

Seagate consumer electronics engineers are ready to help solve integration issues at the company's unique Design Service Centers (DSC). DSC provides dedicated labs to help device makers and channel system integrators design innovative new consumer electronics products. DSC offers a variety of testing, integration and mechanical analysis services, to help customers design, innovate and deliver a new world of hard drive-capable entertainment.
