As a part of its ongoing efforts to support its local communities, Seagate Technology (NYSE:STX) today announced its sponsorship of a unique coaching program for students from underprivileged families to complete their school education. Under the Nava Astha Remedial Coaching Programsponsored by Seagate and organized by Scope Plus, 50 students from classes 9 th to 12 th will be offered special coaching in subsidized classes through two centers, one located in South Delhi and the other in West Delhi.
Nava Astha Remedial Coaching Program is a six-month program for children from economically weaker sections of the community. The program aims to provide support for disadvantaged children to obtain a basic school certificate that will equip them with an academic foundation for their future careers and to make a positive impact in their lives. A Class 10 or Class 12 certificate is a Central/State Board exam certificate and is recognized as a minimum qualification for jobs and technical courses.
The selection of children for the program is being done by Scope Plus in consultation with trained social workers, teachers and grassroots community workers, who are helping to spot deserving children with a keen desire to pursue their studies. Each child will be provided coaching in a minimum of three subjects: English, Mathematics, and Social Studies/Science. The coaching sessions will cater to children in two groups ? seniors (those studying in class 11 th and 12 th) and juniors (those studying in class 9 th and 10 th) ? and will be held six days a week, with one day being reserved for general awareness and other supplementary and extracurricular activities.
A unique aspect of the program is that in addition to constant monitoring by the non-governmental organization (NGO) officials/social workers and teachers, each child will be assigned a mentor who will monitor the performance of the child and provide interactive guidance on a continuous basis. Many people including retired army and police officials, ex-teachers, professionals, university students and educated community members have volunteered to mentor the children covered by the program.
?In my almost two decades of social work with juveniles, I have constantly been faced with children asking why we have only correction support systems and not preventive support systems,? said Ms. Seema Malhotra, managing director of Scope Plus, the NGO that is in charge of the program. ?I am thrilled that Seagate recognized the merit of this project and decided to support us. The socio-economic pressures of today are such that a number of children succumb to depression or fall upon undesirable means to achieve their aspiration of a better life. Through this initiative, we hope to help them equip themselves with the skills and knowledge to achieve their ambition.?
?As part of our corporate values in Seagate, we welcome opportunities to contribute back to the communities in which we operate,? said Sharad Srivastava, country manager for Seagate in India. ?Our sponsorship of theNava Astha Remedial Coaching Program is an expression of our continued commitment to reach out with a supporting hand to the less privileged children in India so that they grow up to lead a better life.?
Seagate has been very active in community support programs in India and is also a sponsor of an outreach program of the SOS Children?s Villages of India. Under this program, Seagate helps underprivileged children from the surrounding villages of the SOS Children?s Village Faridabad gain access to educational, medical and recreational facilities available at the village and also provided them with a nutritional mid-day daily meal.
