The money raised by Seagate and its business partners will help support the educational needs of more than 500 disadvantaged youths from the Wuxi Children's Welfare Association, the Wuxi Care Program and elementary school students from Inner Mongolia.
· Wuxi Children's Welfare Association - Seagate's support of the Wuxi Children's Welfare Association extends back to 1996 when it opened the Seagate Education Center for Disabled Children. Last year, Seagate's contribution allowed the association to set up a computer classroom, library and playground. This year's effort will allow the association to enhance its facilities for its residents.
· Wuxi Care Program - Seagate's collaboration with the Wuxi Broadcast Station and Administration Bureau will provide youth from poorer families with increased educational opportunities. Under this initiative, students with good academic performance facing financial challenges may apply for sponsorship. Upon verification by the Bureau for eligibility, the Seagate Committee will select successful candidates.
· Computer Room for Inner Mongolia - The Inner Mongolia Alakasan ZhuoQibanuoer Public School found a second home in the form of an abandoned army building after sand storms devastated the original building. Seagate will be adding a computer room in their new premises to ensure the students are able to improve their computer skills and enhance their education in line with their better equipped counterparts elsewhere in China.
"As a responsible corporate citizen, Seagate takes special interest in making positive contributions to the communities that we operate in," said Jim Chirico, Seagate's senior vice president, Far East Operations. "While these groups of children represent different segments and geographies within China, they are all woven together in the fabric of society that represents the future of China. We believe it is important to provide them with equal opportunities for success."
"We thank Seagate for their continued support to shape the lives of our youths," said Mr. Gong Peixing, deputy mayor of Wuxi City. "Our collaboration has allowed the general public to empathize with the plight of the less fortunate within our society. More importantly, it will help us nurture talents which otherwise might go untapped."
Seagate has taken a long-term perspective to its corporate giving program in China and the Chinese government has recognized the Company for its contributions to the community. In addition to the Charity Golf Tournaments, Seagate also organized Seagate Star Summer Camps to nurture interest in Science and Technology among elementary students in Wuxi, supported the conservation of giant panda at Wolong, a computer laboratory for the Wuxi Deaf Mute School, opening a Seagate Education Center for Disabled Children in Wuxi and the donation of US$50,000 towards the construction of a primary school in Hunan.
