The content of the seminar included a presentation on Seagate as a company and its place in the technology industry. Gulfem Cakmakci gave details about Seagate's current product lines and told the audience that the company spends more on R&D than all its independent competitors combined, positioning the company with an exceptionally broad market reach. She continued by saying that in the second quarter of fiscal year 2004, Seagate's #1 global market share of disc drive shipments reached 29% for all form factors, with a 32% share in the PC market and a 47% share in the enterprise markets. She added that Momentus, the 2.5-inch notebook hard drive, which was introduced to the market only last, has already achieved significant market share. Cakmakci concluded that consumer electronics products offer exciting possibilities for the disc drive industry in the years ahead.
Tony McDermott, senior engineer, gave detailed information about the technology of hard disc drives. He explained the differences between SCSI and ATA technologies as well as the new serial interfaces; Serial ATA and Serial Attached SCSI. He gave detailed answers to the students' questions on the technical details of storage products in general and provided insights into Seagate's technical leadership.
The annual "Engineers of the Future" event is held at the Bosphorus University each year to enlighten the brightest minds in the country about different fields in which they can pursue their career and decide where to lead their training in order to obtain the best out of their education.
