Seagate and Promise Drive Serial ATA Native Command Queuing Adoption

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Seagate Technology (NYSE:STX) and Promise Technology, Inc. continue to drive Serial ATA NCQ adoption by announcing today the successful compatibility testing of Seagate native Serial ATA drives with Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and Promise's Enhanced SATA RAID controllers that support the NCQ capabilities in the Serial ATA II, Extensions to SATA 1.0 specification to deliver the highest capacity, performance and enhanced data protection for PC and entry-level server applications. The introduction of the Serial ATA NCQ feature will provide original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), solution providers, PC builders, system integrators, value-added resellers (VARs) and do-it-yourself users with a variety of pre-tested Serial ATA combinations for building PCs, RAID arrays and nearline storage applications.

"We are pleased to work with Seagate to advance the availability of Serial ATA features like NCQ - making better Serial ATA RAID solutions available in the computing marketplace," said Suresh Panikar, vice president, Worldwide Channel Sales and Marketing, Promise Technology. "With no issues encountered in testing, we have demonstrated a high degree of compatibility and interoperability between Promise's Enhanced SATA controllers and Seagate's products utilizing the Serial ATA advanced features. Moving forward, we will continue to work and collaborate with industry partners like Seagate to enable new advances for our customers."

"Being leading players in our own field, Seagate and Promise have a long history of successful technology collaborations that continues to bring new innovations to the market," said Daven Chiang, Seagate general manager and director of Sales & Marketing for Taiwan. "The validation of Serial ATA NCQ compatibility testing with products from Seagate and Promise is the latest example of our industry partnership and technology leadership to deliver Serial ATA advanced capabilities to address more demanding PC and entry-level server market application needs."

Promise offers a complete line of Enhanced Serial ATA (SATA) host-bus adapters (HBAs) for Serial ATA drives that are designed to bring desktop, workstation, and entry-level server users the leading edge in ATA storage technology. Promise's Enhanced SATA offering includes two non-RAID controllers, the SATAII150 TX2plus and the SATAII150 TX4, and two RAID controllers, the FastTrak TX2200 and the FastTrak TX4200. For customers that want to add SATA RAID functionality to their storage system, the two-port FastTrak TX2200 and four-port FastTrak TX4200 offer users a range of cost-effective RAID solutions for improved performance and data protection. For customers that don't need the added performance and data protection of SATA RAID, the two-port SATAII150 TX2plus enables users to connect up to two SATA and two Parallel ATA (PATA) drives, while the four-port SATAII150 TX4 supports up to four SATA NCQ drives.

Seagate native Serial ATA drives are designed to offer higher data transfer rates, enhanced reliability, ease of integration and performance scalability. They also provide simpler RAID integration and hot-plug compatibility and allow for smaller system designs. NCQ is a feature that can only be implemented on native Serial ATA hard drives like Seagate's. Seagate Serial ATA NCQ technology enables the hard drive to intelligently reorder and optimize both read and write command execution, improving the performance of queued workloads by minimizing mechanical positioning latencies on the drive. Many applications and are increasingly taking advantage of multi-threading and processor-based Hyper-Threading Technology. These features lead to workloads where multiple commands are outstanding to the drive at the same time. By utilizing NCQ, the hard drive's performance can increase significantly for these workloads.

Seagate Barracuda Serial ATA drives with NCQ are offered with an 8-Mbyte cache and a five-year warranty as standard features, and come in capacities of 160-, 200-, 250-, 300- and 400-Gbytes. They offer excellent performance, and are the toughest PC hard drives in the industry because they resist up to 350 Gs of non-operating shock. Seagate hard drives are also the quietest hard drives in their class, emitting less than 2.5 bels at idle. The low acoustics are made possible by the Seagate patented SoftSonic FDB motor, which comes standard on every drive.
