Seagate and QLogic Jointly Demonstrate 2 Gigabit Fibre Channel End-to-End Solution at Network Storage 2001

Seagate and QLogic Corporation (NASDAQ:QLGC) are showcasing a 2 gigabit-per-second Fibre Channel storage solution this year at the Network Storage conference and tradeshow. With a focus highlighting 2 Gb/s Fibre Channel (FC) performance and interoperability, the demonstration will feature Seagate's Cheetah X15-36LP Fibre Channel drives along with QLogic's SANbox2™ 16 port Fibre Channel switch and SANblade™ 2300 Series host bus adapters. The demonstration will be conducted at Seagate's booth 6A from June 11-14.

In addition to multiple 2 Gb/s Fibre Channel Cheetah drives in a JBOD array, Seagate will also be running a JBOD of 1 Gb/s Fibre Channel Cheetah drives to demonstrate complete backward compatibility. QLogic SANbox2 switches, SANblade 2300 Series HBAs and Seagate Cheetah drives are both 1 Gb- and 2 Gb-ready, and will fully interoperate at both speeds and offer significant performance advantages in both 1 Gb and 2 Gb SAN environments.

"Fibre channel adoption has grown considerably during the past year as companies have discovered their storage infrastructures were inadequate to handle the demands put on them," said Henry Fabian, Seagate director, Disc Drive Product Marketing. "Fibre Channel storage area networks (SANs), like those demonstrated at the Network Storage tradeshow, will enable businesses to reduce performance bottlenecks, obtain faster access to data and give them the ability to reach cost thresholds that allow them to provide new, lower-cost services to clients."

"We're clearly headed toward a new level of storage networking performance as end-to-end 2 gigabit products are now hitting the marketplace," said Dino Balafas, director of Product Marketing in QLogic's Switch Products Group. "Solutions like Seagate's 2 Gb Fibre Channel Cheetah X15-36LP disc drives and QLogic's SANbox2 switches and SANblade 2300 Series host bus adapters address the never-ending need for faster access to growing volumes of data. Customers can now begin migrating their SANs to the 2 Gb infrastructure to harness this new level of performance, while taking comfort in knowing these products integrate seamlessly with their current SAN investments."

Seagate's Cheetah X15-36LP is the world's fastest disc drive, operating at 15K rpm and featuring a low average seek time of 3.6 ms. The Cheetah X15-36LP was created for transaction processing applications such as those running within high-performance, data-intensive enterprise servers and workstations that must access information as quickly as possible, while still maintaining unparalleled reliability and data integrity.

The QLogic SANbox2 16 port switch offers 2 Gigabit performance at 1 gigabit prices in a compact form factor, while the QLogic SANblade 2300 Series packs a powerful suite of features that benefits a wide range of applications from the workstation to the data center. QLogic's end-to-end 2 gigabit SAN infrastructure products are pre-tested for interoperability and administered by a single SAN management software platform. This broad range of high-performance products, all available from a single vendor, allows OEMs, VARs storage service providers (SSPs) and end-users to build cost-effective, plug-and-play SANs that are centrally managed and highly available.
