Student Finalists Named in Boulder County Mathcounts Competition, Sponsored by Seagate

LONGMONT, Colo. - 19 middle-school students from Boulder and Longmont were named finalists in the Boulder County Mathcounts competition on Friday, Feb. 11. The event was again sponsored by Seagate Technology. The finalists will go on to compete in the statewide competition at the University of Denver on March 19.

In its fifth year as host of this annual event, Seagate and its employees are proud to support the young contestants whose ability to tackle challenging mathematical problems under the pressure of competition is nothing short of spectacular.

"These students are bound to be the next generation of top-notch technical professionals," said Seagate's Andy Davis, vice president, product development at the company's Longmont facility. "Judging by the mental energy and enthusiasm they demonstrate in these events, I'd say they're likely to become the kind of employees we would love to hire."

Leading the Seagate-hosted regional event was Craig Ullman, Boulder Chapter Mathcounts coordinator. Having worked with Mathcounts students for seven years, Ullmann says, "They possess amazing mathematical talent. They all have a very bright future ahead of them."

The top six individual winners, beginning with First Place, are: Ben Kunstman and Ben Hoffman of Southern Hills Middle School; Haosuang Zhang and Ben Kuelthau of Summit Middle School; Michael Zhuang of Eldorado K-8 School; and Victor Li of Summit Middle School.

The top four winning teams, beginning with First Place, are: Summit Middle School; Southern Hills Middle School; Centennial Middle School; and Peak to Peak Charter School.

Mathcounts was founded in 1983 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and CNA Foundation. The program is designed to cultivate strategic problem-solving skills in middle-school students. More than five million students have participated in Mathcounts, which operates in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands and worldwide schools run by the U.S. Department of Defense and State Department.
