VARBusiness Taps Seagate's Cheetah 18LP Disc Drive as Best-in-Class

Seagate Technology Inc. (NYSE:SEG) captured a major product award recently when VAR Business, one of the industry's leading technology publications, celebrated the Cheetah 18LP as its top pick of 10,000-rpm hard drives appearing in its product review. The Cheetah 18LP's performance blew past Fujtisu's and Quantum's drives, with throughput--the rate at which data can be transferred by the drive--at a level that is "unmatched." The Cheetah's faster throughput means that users can retrieve their information more quickly and save their data in less time; when multiplied by the large number of people and drives that are typically in networked to enterprise storage, the cost savings for a company can grow very quickly.

"In a repeat of last year's performance the Cheetah turned in the fastest transfer rates of all drives reviewed," hailed VAR Business in its July 5, 1999 issue. The drive was also noted for the benefits it provides for all enterprise storage applications: "Results indicate that the drive is an excellent choice for all installations--particularly if both raw throughput and random access are requiredthe unit leads the pack in price/performance"

Seagate also had the highest marks of all storage competitors for its Value-Added Reseller (VAR) program.

"With more than one hundred honors bestowed to the Cheetah family from the press and customers since its 1996 introduction, the Cheetah class of 10,000-rpm hard drives is one of the most celebrated lines of storage products ever," said Rudy Thibodeau, Seagate's executive director of High-Performance Product Marketing. "Seagate's experience with high performance products goes beyond awards; we continuously demonstrate to the market our ability to manufacture large quantities with the reliability that users demand. VAR Business' in-depth review of the Cheetah 18LP proves once again that Seagate is the industry leader in enterprise storage products."

The Cheetah series of disc drives has garnered awards from more than a dozen countries across four continents. The 10,000-rpm Cheetah series has even beaten 12,000-rpm disc drives in recent press evaluations. The latest drive in the family, the Cheetah 18LP, is currently shipping in volume and is Seagate's third generation of 10,000-rpm disc drives--a spindle speed the company pioneered nearly three years ago.

All Seagate storage products are "Year 2000"-compliant.
