Seagate Offers Teacher Grants; Application Deadline is October 31

LONGMONT, Colo. - Seagate Technology invites science teachers in the St. Vrain Valley and Boulder Valley School Districts to apply for grants of up to $2,000 for hands-on science programs from January – June 2008. The Seagate Technology – Science Teacher Grant program is designed to support teachers’ efforts to bring science to life in the classroom or in after-school programs through hands-on applications of scientific principles.

Areas of science considered in this grant program include: biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, astronomy and space travel, meteorology and oceanography. New with this year’s program is the addition of elementary school teachers to the pool of candidates eligible to apply for the grants.

“We want to offer additional resources to the talented and enthusiastic teachers of our community who educate and inspire young people to embrace science in and out of the classroom,” said Andy Davis, Seagate vice president of Design Engineering. “Sometimes it only takes one influential and creative teacher to spark a student’s enthusiasm in a topic he or she might not have taken an interest in before.”

The Seagate Technology – Science Teacher Grant program will be awarded to programs or projects that present an original and innovative teaching approach that addresses student need. Programs must also have a measurable approach and clearly defined process to evaluate success in at least one of the following areas: student understanding of scientific principles; academic achievement; and achievement of motivational goals (increased participation in extra-credit classroom exercises, science fairs and other extracurricular science programs/activities). The project must also tie into existing curriculum for the school, include a realistic timeline for accomplishing the project within the school year and have an appropriate budget.

Application deadline is 5 p.m. October 31; recipients will be notified by Nov. 16; and funds will be issued December 3 - 14. Applications were distributed through the St. Vrain Valley and Boulder Valley District Offices. For more information, contact Cindy Martini at 720-684-1983 or e-mail: cindy.martini@seagate.com.
