Seagate Serves Up Christmas Dinners For Age Concern Derry

This Christmas, one hundred older people in Derry, who might otherwise feel out of touch with the seasonal celebrations, will enjoy a warm and welcoming traditional Christmas Dinner and festivities, thanks to a corporate donation of £2000 by Seagate (NASDAQ: STX).

Working alongside Age Concern Derry volunteers, the turkey dinner will be served by Seagate employees at the Malvern House Centre (Chapel Road) at 1pm on Thursday, December 18. The afternoon’s entertainment gets underway when Santa arrives on a fire engine with a delivery of presents. The event is later brought to a close with mince pies and afternoon tea.

“In addition to corporate funding of this annual dinner, Seagate employees are also supporting a food drive at the Springtown facility for older people in the community. Age Concern Derry will help us distribute the donated items to those most in need,” explains Dorrie O’Brien, a senior buyer at Seagate. “Age Concern Derry has seen a rise in its average weekly footfall which now stands at 620. We hope these donations will help allow more users of the centre to benefit this Christmas.

“I’m looking forward to helping again this year and seeing the smiles on the older people’s faces as we help serve dinner. It’s such a small amount of time to give up, but so rewarding to be involved in this very worthwhile initiative.”

Roger O’Doherty, Company Secretary of Age Concern Derry, says, “Christmas can be a particularly long and despondent time of year for those who use our centre. Not everyone is lucky enough to have friends and family around them, nor to have full ability and good health. We’ve been running this event for over twenty years to help make the festive season as happy a time as possible for older people, many of whom are socially isolated and living on low incomes. We greatly appreciate that Seagate has agreed to join us and fund the whole event, as the expense of staging such an event is beyond the means of Age Concern Derry.”

Age Concern Derry’s services include: meals on wheels 364 days of the year, a lunch club five days a week, relaxation courses, dances, bingo, art classes and foot care, to name just a few.
