Seagate BlackArmor Discovery: Overview of Share Mapping

Flash and text tutorial for mapping and unmapping public and private shares.

This article will answer two questions:

  • How do I map public/private shares using Seagate’s BlackArmor Discovery Software?
  • How do I unmap a share using Seagate’s BlackArmor Discovery Software?


Mapping a share allows you to assign a drive letter on your local host computer to a Shared Folder on your BlackArmor. The following provides the steps necessary to:

  • map a public share
  • map a private share
  • unmap a share

To Map a Public Share:

  1. Launch BlackArmor Discovery. The Discovery window opens.
  2. Select a BlackArmor from the list provided and click View Drive Details button. A BlackArmor Discovery window opens for the selected NAS 440/420 server, showing its shares.
  3. Select a known, Public share from those listed and click the Map button. The Map Network Drive window opens.
  4. Select the drive letter from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click Yes to continue. The drive letter now appears beside the share to which it was assigned.
  6. To verify that the drive letter is assigned, launch Computer (My Computer with XP). In the drives list, you will see the mapped share.

To Map a Private Share:

  1. Launch BlackArmor Discovery. The Discovery window opens.
  2. Select a BlackArmor from the list provided and click View Drive Details button. A BlackArmor Discovery window opens for the selected NAS 440/420 server, showing its shares.
  3. Select a known, Private share from those listed and click the Map button. The Map Network Drive window opens.
  4. Select the drive letter from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click Yes to continue. You are now prompted to authenticate.
  6. Enter the Username and Password for the private share.
  7. Click OK. The drive letter now appears beside the share to which it was assigned. To verify that the drive letter is assigned, launch Computer (My Computer with XP). In the drives list, you will see the mapped share.
  8. If you select the drive letter for the private share, you will be asked to authenticate to gain access.

To Unmap a Share:

  1. Launch BlackArmor Discovery. The Discovery window opens.
  2. Select a BlackArmor from the list provided and click View Drive Details button. A BlackArmor Discovery window opens for the selected NAS 440/420 server, showing its shares.
  3. Select a mapped share from those listed and click the Unmap button. The BlackArmor Discovery window opens asking you to confirm the unmapping.
  4. Click Yes to continue. The mapping is removed.
